This position serves as the environmental, health and safety professional at the Valmont facility in Brenham, TX

This position requires individual initiative on special projects to complete a wide variety of tasks that are part of Valmont’s comprehensive EHS initiatives. This includes guiding the activities of the site’s environmental, health and safety related teams. The position will support implementation of Valmont’s Health and Safety Playbook and Environmental and Sustainability Playbook for the site.  The EHS Specialist must be able to align the site’s EHS activities with Valmont’s overall environmental, health and safety strategies. The incumbent is responsible to detect sub-standard EHS performance using leading and lagging indicators and take action in conjunction with appropriate site and division leadership teams. It is critical that the EHS Coordinator assists others in their growth and knowledge in Environmental Health and Safety practices. It is expected that the EHS Coordinator interacts with site production employees to identify and control hazards that can result in harm.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist with the creation of annual, site-specific environmental, health and safety targets and objectives for the site in order to measurably reduce exposure to the site’s most significant health and safety risks and environmental impacts
  • Identifies and initiates action based EHS goals for site leadership team members and supervisors to support achievement of site-specific EHS targets and objectives
  • Manage the results for day-to-day adherence to company directed Safety KPIs
  • Own all aspects of the plant electronic EHS management system (Intelex®) and serve as the sites subject matter expert.
  • Coordinate efforts and support environmental, health and safety teams (e.g., Safety Committee, Green Team, etc.) and facilitate their engagement in ownership of the activities required to maintain compliance, reduce the site’s environmental footprint, and drive continuous improvement
  • Oversee administration, development, and maintenance of training processes to ensure that required environmental, health and safety training is defined, addresses required content and is tracked to completion
  • Assist with Injury, near miss, property damage, and hazard investigations; lead root cause analysis sessions and aggressively pursue above the line corrective action implementation
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality and discretion when utilizing all forms of communication
  • Guide all department leadership and supervisors on the selection and use of EHS equipment; manage plant PPE programs and related information systems
  • Administer plant EHS Best Practice Programs (BSP), as well as apply, evaluate, revise, and communicate site specific EHS policies
  • Assist with collection, data entry, analysis and submittal of Environmental Social and Governance deliverables; to include waste, permitting and sustainability programs
  • Serve as a liaison between workers compensation insurance adjustors, risk management, medical providers, employees and governing agencies
  • Conduct regular safety and environmental audits/inspections to detect hazardous conditions; recommend and oversee corrective action implementation
  • Maintain scheduled communication points with supervisors, EHS Manager, Sr Plant Manager, and other key stakeholders;  participate in regularly scheduled Division EHS Leadership meetings
  • Perform miscellaneous duties, projects, and all other duties as assigned

  • This position reports to the Environmental, Health, & Safety Manager
  • This position has no direct reports
  • Occasionally requires work beyond typical business hours

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Associate’s Degree with 2+ years of industry experience, or High School diploma with accredited professional safety certification and 5+ years of experience
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office products; namely Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Able to work in a cooperative manner and communicate effectively in a positive manner with all organization levels
  • Able to read, interpret and revise safety policies, procedures, training materials and standard operating instructions and procedural manuals
  • Ability to problem solve independently
  • Strong decision making capabilities
  • Above average written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to adapt when business needs dictate a change

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and accredited professional safety certification  
  • 2+ years of Environmental, Health, & Safety Experience

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in a split office and production floor setting. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  Travel is seldom required for this position.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer.  The employee is routinely required to move about the office and production areas.  Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds in working with equipment.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Incumbent will also be exposed to production facilities where specific PPE will be required such as hand, hearing, foot, eye, and head protection.  There will also be exposure to outside elements.  Being outside will also expose them to material handling equipment such as forklifts, straddle trucks, and shag trucks.
