A Brief Summary of This Position:


The Associate Engineer is responsible for the structural analysis and design of products to be quoted and fabricated by our manufacturing facilities.  In this individual contributor role, the incumbent is responsible for completing engineering designs to meet project requirements as defined by customers. The incumbent works on the Engineering and Technical Customer Service Team who has responsibility for the design of product for quotation requests and orders.  In addition, the incumbent plans and monitors workflow of design activities to meet milestone dates for projects assigned.  The Associate Engineer will consult with senior engineers on the team to ensure that customer specifications are met and designs are feasible and efficient for manufacturing. 


Product lines the individual may work on include Cellular Equipment support structures such as guyed towers, self-supporting towers or tubular communication poles.  The heights typically range from 100 ft to 1,000+ ft.  In addition, Associate Engineers also support the Lighting and Traffic product group designing over the road traffic structures, stadium lighting structures, parking lot lighting, high mast structures for interstate interchange lighting and sign structures for guiding traffic.  All of these products that impact the public’s day-to-day activitieis must be designed to meet design code requirements in American Association of State Highway and Traffic Officials (AASHTO), Telecommunication Industry Association (TIA) and International Building Code (IBC) amongst others.  The design team is responsible for day-to-day customer support, identifying changes in the design process to support industry trends and supporting the manufacturing facilities within the global Valmont footprint to ensure designs are prepared properly for production.   Finally, the incumbent will also be part of the Valmont Engineering team focused on working in the industry design code development committees, customer visit and trainings along with justifying and preparing in-house product testing to advance the product lines for customer use.


Essential Functions:

  • Reports to an Engineering Manager.
  • Domestic travel may be required up to 10%
  • Perform routine engineering work requiring application of standard techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related design tasks
  • Analyze and design communication structures by FEM and other structural design software to appropriate codes taking into consideration both public safety and minimum cost
  • Interpret customer specifications, customer needs and market/sales needs
  • Communicate engineering data to customers both internal and external
  • Assisting sales with pricing and quoting information as it relates to engineering
  • Applying knowledge from design codes to improve internal processes and identifying advancements in the design codes

Other Important Details about the Role:

  • Reviews and interprets project plans, specifications and customer requirements and designs the most efficient and economical structure to meet those requirements, while adhering to the applicable Valmont design standards and national design standards.
  • Independently able to perform the analysis and design of standard products, with occasional assistance of senior level engineers.
  • Assists internal personnel (i.e. drafters, project administrators, etc.) in the review and interpretation of any design work generated either manually or with a computer design program.
  • Limited customer contact by telephone, written communication and occasional personal visits.
  • Occasionally works with manufacturing personnel to ensure that any product designed can be manufactured efficiently.
  • Coordinates daily activities with team members to ensure the most efficient use of time, and flow of work activities through the work team.
  • Possess an innate curiosity to improve processes and procedures that will improve the Design team

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Emphasis or other related field of study
  • Successful completion of Engineer-in-Training Certificate
  • Strong technical competence in structural engineering
  • Demonstrated strengths in interpersonal skills, including the ability to adapt and professionally communicate with a variety of people


•         Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Products, especially: Excel, Word and Outlook


•         The ability to solve complex problems with high attention to detail and work in a fast-paced environment subject to specific deadlines


Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • One year experience in a structural engineering role preferred
  • 3 years related engineering or engineering tech experience preferred
  • Strong CAD skills including design applications
  • Knowledge or understanding of computer programming

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:


Work is typically performed in an office setting.  There may be limited exposure to a manufacturing environment or outside weather conditions.  When visiting a manufacturing area, the incumbent will be required to wear all mandatory personal protective equipment.  The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  Domestic travel, including overnights, may be required up to 5%.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer.  The employee is occasionally required to move about the office.  Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
