A Brief Summary of This Position

The Business Line Manager is responsible for the execution of the division goals through the creation and maintenance of the product strategy as well as the management of the profitability of the product line.  Managing the vision for growth and profitability of the product line will require combining primary and secondary research and the feedback from sales, business development, operations and external market resources. 

In this role, the Business Line Manager own performance measurements which determine product demand, positioning, and profitability.  Valmont product lines to include all forms of design and construction for products produced to support the product line.  Specific duties will include business case justification, market modeling, pricing policy recommendations, competitive analysis, capability analysis, market position analysis, and market intelligence for the new product development team.  Reporting to the Vice President of Business Line Management, the Business Line Manager will be a steward for the associated product line throughout North America and will comply with all ethical guideline of Valmont Industries.

Important Details about the Role


  • Establishes the product plan / strategy and roadmap in support of the divisional strategy
  • Identify the business and operational requirements based upon customer needs and market feedback
  • Develops the new product introduction plan based on voice of the customer input and market research
  • Analyze the customer detail and market potential to provide product forecast guidance
  • Responsible for achieving product-segment target results including revenue, profitability and market share


  • Analyze the competitive landscape determining market capacity and provide guidance on margins  and lead times
  • Provide margin and lead time guidance to Project Administration team
  • Researches and understands price/value in each respective segment and optimizes gross profit margin by driving cost reductions, adjusting price, or exiting markets
  • Provides financial analysis on product line profitability for current and potential customers or projects
  • Works with Sales team to deploy product plan and ensure clear communication of product segment objectives
  • Analysis of bids and forecast to determine win / loss ratios to provide quote strategy by customer type and region
  • Executes and maintains the product segmentation process
  • Assists in the marketing plan development for new product introductions within the product segment
  • Works closely with the Marketing Department to develop, fund and execute, ROI-based integrated marketing communications campaigns that influence target audiences and grow sales.  Develops and implements a brand strategy as appropriate


  • Provides timely and consistent communication on the analysis of market share, margins, and competitive landscape to divisional leadership
  • Effectively communicates and trains the business development and sales force on the product strategy / plan 
  • Develops and communicates responses and company positions in response to product specific challenges
  • Communicates the current win / loss opportunity detail to the sales and business development team
  • Product Segment results and progress towards Division goals and associated metrics
  • Other various metrics as defined by Division management team

People Management

  • Responsible for the direct management of up to 6 professional individual contributors or other team supervisors
  • Provides strategy direction for each respective business line team and its members
  • Responsible for succession planning for respective business line teams
  • Provides guidance and employee development of business line team members
  • Indirect team leadership required for new product development teams, large project coordination, and strategic sales teams

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Minimum five (5) years of demonstrated product leadership experience with a track record of consistent and exemplary achievement
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Engineering, or equivalent
  • High tech background in equipment, electronics, remote systems repair, automation, drone operation, Lidar and/or other cutting edge technology
  • Demonstrated mathematical aptitude, exceptional financial acumen 
  • Decisive problem-solving ability and capability to assess people and situations with accuracy
  • Confident self-starter with integrity and accountability
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • Highly motivated, competitive, and entrepreneurial individual with a desire to tackle challenging opportunities
  • Must be able to effectively and persuasively present complex information in a simple way to executive level audiences
  • Can conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Ability to travel up to 20%

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Business or Engineering
  • Utility Industry Experience

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:  Primarily in a fast-paced and demanding office environment.

  • may be required to go into production, warehouse or outdoor work environments
  • regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings
  • frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working
  • occasionally required to stand and walk
  • must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests
  • occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds including frequently carrying a laptop, occasionally pulling, pushing or lifting equipment and /or luggage when travelling
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
