A Brief Summary of This Position:

The Global Vice President of Engineering serves as a key member of the Global Engineered Support Structures team and is responsible for the division’s engineering strategy and execution globally. This individual reports to the Group President of Global Engineered Support Structures and is responsible for reviewing, implementing and monitoring all engineering strategies and solutions, and managing the group assigned.  As the leader of the division engineering functions, the incumbent serves as the lead representative and interfaces to other key stakeholders throughout the organization. In addition, this person is responsible for the evaluation of current resources and processes, and the development of roadmaps and upgrade strategies to meet current and future business and customer needs.


Essential Functions:

  • Coordinate the strategic engineering direction within the division including continuous improvement and innovation efforts
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders to proactively match and coordinate engineering resources and priorities to deliver needed business driving support globally
  • Partner across Valmont Industries to resolve engineering issues, support business planning and seek synergies to achieve economies of scale throughout the global enterprise
  • Select, organize, train, develop, and motivate a strong engineering team to assure high level of productivity, the best use of individual and group capabilities and appropriate career planning for all team members
  • Develop and recommend the department budget, monitor approved budgets, note deviations, and initiate corrective actions in order to control costs and report on engineering performance and planning efforts
  • Lead the engagement with partners in IT, manufacturing, supply chain and product management to ensure resources are aligned to effectively support business strategies and reduce waste
  • Evaluate new technical developments and investments that will advance division objectives 
  • Apply ideas from other industries, situations, and companies to growth and market expansion
  • Partner with Sales and Marketing to ensure customer expectations are met and exceeded
  • Build process and partnerships throughout the product lifecycle and supply chain to ensure specifications, regulations and expectations are met and exceeded
  • This role requires up to 30% travel internationally and domestically, including overnight stays
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 15 pounds

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 10+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience with multiple CAD, 3D Design or Product Data Management (PDM) applications, most predominately AutoCad, ProE, or products like Catia or Matrix One
  • Must show a career track of progressive engineering leadership roles
  • Experience should include roles in deploying and managing engineering processes, applications and oversight on a global scale
  • Proven oral and written communication skills to clearly and concisely present information, gain buy in and earn commitment to actionable business strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead and develop engineering teams
  • Familiarity/expertise in Lean methodologies

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • 10+ years of engineering professional level experience
  • Minimum of five years mid to upper management experience
  • Master’s degree in Engineering or MBA
  • Experience with multiple, global engineering technologies
  • Experience leading engineering efforts within a global organization
  • Manufacturing experience and an understanding of engineering manufacturing costs models

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an office setting.  The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings.    Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  .  International and domestic travel is required up to 30%, including overnight stays.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer.  The employee is occasionally required to move about the office.  Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
