A Brief Summary of This Position:


This individual contributor position is responsible for all the quoting, coordination of shipping, providing of equipment and paperwork associated with transportation activity of the Valley, NE location. This position works in a team setting with the other coordinators, and is responsible for assisting with all of the daily duties of outbound domestic shipments for Valmont Industries. This includes the process of assigning and releasing trailers, and assistance for responsibility of inbound shipments, rail shipments, and communication with carriers, customers, dealers, and Valmont personnel.  Incumbent will also be responsible for application of freight rates, and claims.  Aware of the DOT Compliance program to assure accountability, safety and compliance with the rules of the U.S. Department of Transportation – Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and must be available for special assignments as directed by the Director of Logistics.


Essential Functions:

  • This position reports to the Valley Logistics Manager and has no direct reports.
  • Secures quotations; manage shipment, paperwork associated with the movement, loading, and deliveries for Pole, Communication Tower, T-Pole, Tubing, Irrigation or LTL shipments.
  • Coordinates domestic orders with shipping, marketing, and carriers for a timely delivery and to be cost effective.
  • Coordinates the customer service activities necessary to price, quote, schedule, manufacture, and ship at acceptable margins.
  • Approves freight charges.
  • Demonstrates the ability to accept a variety of duties, as time permits, ranging from special projects as directed by business units, to filling in during short absences of key position personnel.
  • Effectively communicates with customers and dealers, coordinating delivery appointments with carriers, to meet company deadlines.
  • Coordinates the shipment of all truckload shipments from the Valley location.
  • Initiates and maintains sufficient carrier contacts and communication to carry out objectives.
  • Adheres to and follows established transportation policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Generates reports as required to support business or customer needs.

    Other Important Details about the Role:

  • Assists Freight Specialists as needed in the Coordination of freight auditing and payment of all invoices for the domestic locations where applicable. 
  • Prepares special projects for freight analysis of payment records, freight comparison and other miscellaneous reports.  Meet with all commodity managers to discuss freight cost management and strategies. 
  • Works with freight rating and coordinating software, Transportation Management System (TMS).
  • Works with on-staff DOT Safety Manager to be aware of Valmont’s DOT Compliance.  Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of DOT Compliance and Safety Requirements of the U.S. Department of Transportation – Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication to interface with internal Valmont departments, as well as outside carriers, dealers, contractors, vendors and customers.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Preferred Bachelors with 3+ years experience in a manufacturing/distribution setting in Logistics, Supply Chain, Sales or Customer Service; or Associates Degree with 5+ years relevant experience; or 7+ years of relevant experience
  • Detail oriented with the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment with a focus on accuracy, follow through, and communication;
  • Ability to quote logistics moves in a cost-effective and time critical manner utilizing technology available;
  • Ability to analyze data in order to effectively quote competitive shipping costs;
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills exhibited under tight deadlines with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Must be proficient in Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer
  • The knowledge and experience necessary to assist with all aspects of logistics process;
  • Positive, professional demeanor in all interaction with colleagues, carriers, customers and vendors;
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills to clearly and concisely communicate with all levels of the workforce and management;
  • Ability to work with people in a professional and respectful manner, address issues in a constructive way, and speak with confidence in areas related to logistics;

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field.

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:


Incumbent must be able to work in an office setting.  This position may require the incumbent to work outside during all seasons of the year, in various manufacturing and storage areas, as well as office environments.  As a result the position may require walking, standing, lifting, and stooping. While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The incumbent is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; stoop, kneel, or crouch; talk, hear, taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
