A Brief Summary of This Position:

This Manager role is primarily responsible for overseeing the certification and training program for Utility inspectors which includes administering examinations and determining whether or not training candidates qualify for certification.  This includes inspectors at each Utility fabrication location, as well as others in the Utility Quality Assurance department. The main focus will be on VT, MT, and UT nondestructive testing (NDT), along with coating and welding inspection methodology and competency.  Will also oversee the calibration and maintenance of the inspection instrumentation.  Training may also include inspection processes other than NDT, such as destructively testing seam weld coupons, and any other type of inspection process and/or instrumentation relative to producing Utility product.  In addition to training, this role will lead the effort in establishing NDT techniques and procedures, interpreting codes, and designing test methods and techniques to be used in the Utility inspection process.

This position requires a broad understanding of the Utility product, how it is manufactured including inspection requirements for each product feature, as well as proficiency in five areas of NDT:  Visual (VT), Eddy Current ET), Magnetic Particle (MT), Penetrant Testing (PT), Radiographic Test (RT) and Ultrasonic (UT), along with coating and welding inspection.  This position will routinely interact with production and quality management and the associates who manufacture and/or inspect product. 

As with many of the roles within the Quality Assurance organization, this position may be called upon to support other events, such as field evaluation support, customer pre-production manufacturing evaluations, technical sales assistance, etc.  In particular, this role will be called upon at times to participate in evaluating third party testing practices to determine whether or not they are adequate with regards to Utility product.

Essential Functions:

  • This position reports to  the Vice President Quality Assurance and has one direct report
  • This role requires up to 50% travel (internationally/domestically), including overnight stays
  • Coaching and mentoring the QA Technical Training staff while promoting a continuous improvement environment
  • Building ‘Quality capability’ across the organization through training, culture development and role modeling
  • Responsibility for managing, leading and directing staff reports
  • Manage matters relating to the QA Technical Training team developing and supporting as appropriate (motivating, delegating, performance management, appraisals, recruiting and identifying and arranging job related development training)
  • Responsibility for managing and achieving the team budget and all prevailing team KPI’s
  • Develop, maintain and coordinate monthly quality reports with trend analysis to QA upper management
  • Oversee the day-to-day inspection training functions supporting the operation
  • Identify areas where inspection training strategies need to be revised
  • Monitor inspection training results to ensure product/process quality is maintained identifying where documentation and actual product specifications do not match
  • Oversees and conducts inspection training
  • Negotiate contracts with outside training agencies to conduct training
  • Oversees administration of training examinations
  • Develop training curriculum
  • Creating annual training schedules and executing accordingly
  • Establish NDT techniques and procedures using all NDT methods
  • Interpret codes
  • Design test methods and techniques to be used in Utility inspection processes
  • Recommend any  new training initiatives to upper management
  • Maintain quality training matrix
  • Manage instrument calibration - division wide process
  • Provide structure and process for obtaining certifications
  • Develop Train the Trainer program – provide ongoing support and coordination
  • Log and document technical performance concerns – address appropriately
  • Develop and lead routine training
  • Coordinate and lead a QA best practices group – division wide
  • Manage inspection instrumentation calibration for Utility QA department
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds, although most frequent lift is up to 20 pounds

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Preferred Bachelor’s degree with 6+ years relevant experience or Associate’s degree with 8+ years of experience or 10+ years of relevant quality experience
  • Travel up to 50% domestically – some international possible
  • Five years of experience in metals fabrication included welding, and two of working in a Quality Control and/or Quality Assurance group as an inspector, and two years in a training role
  • Prior leadership experience
  • Project management or program management background
  • ASNT-TC-1A (American Society of Nondestructive Testing recommended practice number) VT Level III, MT Level III, PT Level III, RT Level III and UT Level III
  • AWS-CWI (American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector)
  • NACE (National Association of Corrosion Engineers) Level 3
  • Ability to interpret standard U.S. and metric measurements
  • Ability to understand and use moderate industry mathematical equations and formulas
  • Ability to write legible reports and findings
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical data
  • Blue print interpretation

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Seven years of experience working in a Quality Control and/or Quality Assurance group as an inspector
  • Seven years of inspection training
  • Seven years of non-destructive testing experience

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an office setting.  The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings.    Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  Up to 50% travel requirements for this position.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer.  The employee is occasionally required to move about the office.  Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
