A Brief Summary of This Position:

The Market Development Manager-Africa position is an individual contributor position for the Irrigation Division.  The position supports the regional sales initiatives and programs by developing and managing projects related to large agriculture and irrigation projects. This position requires professional coordination with local governments. NGO’s, world financing institutions, USA university partners, Africa University partners, local African dealers, and Valmont Irrigation personnel.  

Essential Functions:

  • The  incumbent  is  often  required  to  interact  with  various  world  and  local  governmental  agencies,  private  aid agencies,  and  local  academic  communities  often  at  very  senior  levels.  Excellent  facilitation/negotiation  skills and  an  in-depth  understanding  of  local  social,  ethnic  and  cultural  differences  are  necessary  to  be  effective  in  this position.
  • Must  be  able  to  develop  the  need  for  the  product,  aid  the  local  private  or  government  agency  in  negotiating  the project  funding  with  governments,  banks  and  international  organizations  and  provide  oversight  in  managing  the project implementation.
  • Work closely with Valley University to develop and own appropriate training for local partners
  • Research and write grants to cover project expenses
  • Coordinate with Valmont personnel to prepare and deliver training classes and support the delivery of these classes
  • Work with Territory Manager and representative teams to coordinate activity in the region

Other Important Details about the Role:

  • This position requires a large amount of international travel up to 50% to deal locally with the developing areas (Africa)
  • This position reports into the VP/GM International Irrigation and has no direct reports

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Preferred Bachelors with 6+ years relevant experience or Associates Degree with 8+ years relevant experience or 10+ years of relevant experience
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Arabic
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment, building relationships with all levels of employees, customer, and governments
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities and meet aggressive deadlines
  • Ability to schedule daily workload without close supervision or direction
  • Ability to make decisions and apply sound judgment while working remote
  • Project management certification

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Business/project management  preferred
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently in ambiguous environments
  • Strong leadership, problem solving, and planning skills

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an office setting.  The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings.  Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  Overnight travel to North American events is required during approximately 15% of the year. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer.  The employee is occasionally required to move about the office.  Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
