A Brief Summary of This Position:

This position is accountable for overseeing the day to day management of the coatings facility’s physical and human resources including line and staff functions to meet or exceed customer expectations in terms of quality and on-time delivery objectives.  This position is also responsible for ensuring productivity metrics are achieved and that the principles of Lean manufacturing are utilized consistently including standard work requirements, countermeasures and visual aids management.  The incumbent is actively involved in performance management decisions.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage the use of plant resources to ensure that all plant operations are meeting or exceeding, safety, quality, and production goals as set by the General Manager.
  • Communicates daily with all levels of employees regarding daily safety, quality and production metrics to be achieved, and on-going training and development activities. Communicates regularly with direct reports on their personal and team achievements and improvements needed, so that these individuals understand what is expected of them and their teams.
  • Provides positive and professional leadership guidance to all employees at all times.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental and safety requirements as specified by corporate policy and government regulation.
  • Facilitate positive customer relations through the services of quality coated product and on-time delivery.
  • Ensures production goals are met by establishing productivity metrics and standard operating procedures within the provisions of Corporate and Division policies, ensuring that all department heads are accountable to achieve these results.
  • Utilize production and other analytical reports to better gauge plant performance and to make better decisions.
  • Review and control operation expenses for raw materials, operating supplies, and equipment.
  • Oversee manpower requirements through proper staffing, training, and development of production employees, supervisors, and other technical personnel with management staff.
  • Plan and develop plant personnel to produce maximum efficiency and utilization of available resources.
  • Select, train, develop and motivate an effective staff to assure the profitable attainment of present and future safety, production, quality and service objectives.

Other Important Details about the Role:

  • This position reports directly to the General Manager, and through operations supervisors must direct and coordinate activities of all production departments.
  • Seeks to continually assess the talent in the organization ensuring that those in their positions are capable of acceptable performance in those roles, allowing for cross training opportunities and developing employees.
  • Standardize/optimize operations and procedures, so that best practices are easily transferable to other Coatings sites, new acquisitions and new businesses.
  • Look for areas within the site operation to improve revenues and efficiencies and transfer effective management practices that help meet Valmont business objectives including the development of new applications and technological innovations.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Management, Engineering, or Business with an emphasis in  operations
  • Two years of supervisory or management experience in an industrial environment
  • Proven track record in lean manufacturing principles including standard work, continuous improvement, problem resolution and delivery of results positively affecting the bottom line of the organization
  • The ability to work in a cooperative manner and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization
  • The availability to travel at least 10% of the time
  • Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Mechanical Engineering
  • One year of experience in industrial coatings or a related industry
  • Five years of supervisory or management experience in an industrial environment
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and environmental regulations as well as state and federal labor standards
  • The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals
  • The ability to recognize and solve practical problems or issues
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to support divisional business objectives
  • The ability to communicate and interact with coworkers in a positive manner
  • Six Sigma Green or Black Belt Certification

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Some of the working conditions for this position is in a manufacturing shop environment with exposure to dirt, grease, fumes, cold, heat, noise, dust. The Operations Manager will work in both the office and shop environment.   Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  10% travel is required for this position.  Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
