A Brief Summary of This Position:


This individual contributor position is responsible for participating in the Corporate Help Desk’s function and day-to-day operations, and is accountable for hardware and software support of the personal computer community at Valmont both on-site and off-site, under the direction of PC Support Specialists II, PC Support Specialists III and Computer Services Manager.  The primary responsibility of this position is to provide technical assistance by phone to end users within the Valmont network.  Administers mobile devices, and maintains Valmont’s PC’s; related equipment and system software. The incumbent will provide proactive customer support, exceptional customer service and dress appropriately for the work environment at all times. Other duties include preparing PC’s for software installation and delivery; assisting with audio and video conferences and equipment; retiring equipment; maintaining system software and other special project and duties as assigned by the manager. This role provides support to over 3000 PCs and 1500 peripheral devices, including audio/video equipment for off-site locations and the following divisions at the Valley site: Structures, Tubing, International Valley, Utility Valley, and Corporate.


Essential Functions:

  • Ability to maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to identify and replace components on computers and peripheral equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to configure personal computers for network operations
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups and multicultural languages
  • Ability to lift and transport equipment weighing up to 50 pounds from a floor or table position using a proper lifting technique
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, problem-solving and analytical ability, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

Other Important Details about the Role:

  • Provide technical assistance to Valmont computer system users on complex issues
  • Monitor Service Desk Plus Ticketing System
  • Perform mobile device administration
  • Configure, install, inspect, and perform basic troubleshooting and repair of personal computers, laptops, and related equipment such as printers and scanners
  • Install, test, and perform basic troubleshooting and repair of operating systems and over 100 software applications on end user PCs and laptops
  • Perform basic maintenance and repair of embedded and controller PCs in the manufacturing shops to ensure the equipment is correctly configured and working
  • Confer with end users to identify hardware/software needs and then prepare PC equipment for delivery to customers
  • Retire equipment that is no longer serviceable
  • Maintain audio/video equipment 

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • High school diploma and two years computer services Help Desk/telephone experience
  • One year of customer service experience in corporate, retail, or manufacturing setting
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Basic knowledge of mobile communication administration including Blackberry, Androids, and IOS platforms
  • Experience using remote desktop tools
  • Basic experience troubleshooting VPN issues
  • Experience using call logging software
  • Basic knowledge of the components of Intel or AMD based personal computers and laptops
  • Demonstrated ability to provide basic instruction on the use of Microsoft Operating Systems software
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft’s Operating Systems, including Windows 7 & 8, 10
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft’s Active Directory user/computer administration
  • Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint)

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree of Applied Science in Information Technology  preferred
  • A+ certification; Microsoft certification for MOUS or MCSE products; and Microsoft MCDST certification for PC hardware preferred

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an office setting.  The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings.  Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  No travel requirements for this position.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer.  The employee is occasionally required to move about the office.  Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The position requires the ability to occasionally lift and transport equipment weighing up to 50 pounds from a floor or table position using a proper lifting technique.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
