A Brief Summary of This Position

The Quality Specialist will provide technical direction and support for the NA Steel Operations in areas of welding inspection and will work with Quality, Manufacturing, and Engineering Design to ensure that the optimal welding inspection procedures, methods and equipment are being used throughout the NA Steel Operations. The Quality Specialist has to have the ability to troubleshoot complex quality related failures, improve existing manufacturing processes and inspection techniques, and develop new inspection procedures to eliminate escapes. Validate welding inspection procedures, inspection reliability and inspector competence through practical mock up testing using industrial standards/acceptance criteria to ensure compliance to requirements. Directs and coordinates technical personnel in performing inspections to ensure workers' compliance with established welding procedures, restrictions, and standards; in testing welds for conformance with national code requirements; or testing welding personnel for certification.

Essential Functions:

  • Auditing of operating activities in all areas; making recommendations for improvements, developing action plans, and following up to ensure effectiveness
  • Developing policies and procedures for inspection and processing of manufactured and purchased parts
  • Coordinate, work, and negotiate with 3rd party customer auditors
  • Formalized RCA utilizing analytical tools on quality failures to eliminate reoccurrences  (ex: SPC, six sigma, 8 step)
  • Thorough understanding of weld inspection methods; assist with the interpretation and implementation of requirements
  • Train and validate inspector competency, accuracy, and completeness
  • Ability to communicate at all levels of the organization in a positive, clear manner
  • Assist with review of customer contracts and specifications prior to fabrication
  • Comply with all Safety Policies, Procedures, and Quality Systems Procedures
  • Ability to travel up to 60%

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • 5 years of NDT and/or advanced manufacturing experience
  • NDT Degree or ASNT level II certifications in UT, MT, and VT
  • Ability to achieve AWS CWI certification
  • Person of passion and integrity, who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results
  • Experience in multi-site manufacturing organization
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and Power Point
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to share and accept ideas from subordinates to foster a team environment
  • Analytical Skills- Ability to use thinking and reasoning to solve a problem.
  • Accurate- Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly. 
  • Communication, Oral- Ability to communicate effectively with others using the spoken word
  • Ethics- Maintain an attitude that unlawful or unethical actions are not acceptable.
  • Preferred Bachelors with 5+ years relevant experience or Associates Degree with 7+ years relevant experience or 9+ years of relevant experience

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Posses These Qualifications

  • 10 tears of NDT and/or advanced manufacturing experience
  • ASNT Level III certifications in UT, MT, and VT
  • AWS CWI certification
  • Knowledge of AWS D1.1  and AISC code and requirements
  • Knowledge of Valmont products and internal specifications
  • ASQ (or equivalent) Certified Quality Auditor

Working Environment and Physical Efforts

Work is typically performed in a manufacturing plant environment and the incumbent needs to be able to move about the office and production environments. There is relatively constant exposure to conditions such as dust, dirt, heat, fumes, and cold as well as noise levels above 80 decibels. Many aspects of this role are physical and the incumbent has to be able to lift up to 50 lbs. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, feel, as well as balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
