A Brief Summary of This Position:

The Senior Accountant assists the General Manager and the Valmont Coatings Division Accounting employees.  This role is responsible for general accounting and reporting at Oklahoma Galvanizing.  This includes preparing and posting general ledger transactions, preparation and review of account reconciliations, participation in the month-end closing process, and identifying accounting process improvements.  This position also performs accounting functions pertaining to Coatings Division month-end, quarter-end and year-end closings. This individual serves as a player-coach, primarily performing accounting tasks at the Senior Accountant level and managing a small team.

Essential Functions:

  • This position reports to the General Manager and indirectly to the Valmont Coatings Division Controller and has 3 direct reports
  • Prepares and reviews the financial activities of the site.  This includes gathering and communicating financial information to the General Manager and Coatings Division Accounting employees.
  • Ensures that timely and thorough preparation of financial records and reports for use by management and operating personnel are completed based on the requirements set by Valmont CFO, Corporate Controller and Valmont Coatings Division Controller.  These records must comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), governmental regulations, taxing authorities, and the policies and procedures of the company.
  • Record journal entries to the general ledger and complete balance sheet reconciliations a monthly
  • Month-end review and analysis of income statement results
  • Analyzes monthly transactions and trend comparisons which affect designated balance sheet accounts and follows up on discrepancies and reconciling items
  • Assist both Internal and External Audit with compliance and regulatory investigations
  • Maintain accuracy and timeliness of transaction reports
  • Serves as a subject matter expert resource for other accountants
  • Sets up new customers in the accounts receivable system.  Alerts and involves General Manager for escalated collections activity (personal handling, agency or attorney) approval.  Executes and tracks joint check agreements.  Keeps the Sales team and General Manager updated regarding current customers and aging of accounts receivable.
  • Responsible for the supervision of accounts payable and accounts receivable employees.  Including training new employees, improving controls, reviewing transactions, and coordinating back-up duties.  Responsible for maintaining the integrity of data entry for QAD at Oklahoma Galvanizing. 
  • Processes customer invoices.  Follows up on discrepancies, issues credit memos, and involves General Manager on any issues needing to be resolved.
  • Performs purchasing and general clerical work as needed.  Effective communication, both written and verbal, with customers, vendors, and employees is required.
  • Ensures quality of output and processes in the accounting area based on the Valmont Coatings Division Controller focus on providing accurate products and services to internal and external customers.  Will also manage the collection of necessary tax identification as instructed.  Assists the General Manager in achieving operational and financial objectives for this location.

Other Important Details about the Role:

  • Ensures the accuracy of the general ledger and applicable financial statements.
  • Utilizes General Manager and public information input to set credit limits for customers.
  • Maintains accurate records of all current vendor contracts and/or agreements.
  • Ensure that proper audit controls are in place and followed.
  • Handles purchase requisitions as directed by the General Manager.
  • Processes Accounts Payable accurately and timely for General Manager review.
  • Ensure that all fixed assets are located and labeled appropriately and agree to detail fixed asset list that ties to the general ledger.
  • Works well with others, always keeping a strong customer service focus in mind for both internal and external customers.
  • Gives recommendations for continuous improvement of products, processes and services and measurement of same to make efficient use of the company resources.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Preferred Bachelors with 5+ years relevant experience or associate’s degree with 7+ years relevant experience or 9+ years relevant experience
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, Access and PowerPoint
  • Experience leading or driving projects of varying complexity
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and follow instructions 
  • Ability to effectively analyze data
  • Some travel may be required
  • Curiosity about software solutions to streamline the accounting close
  • Very strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and under high pressure
  • Experience in a wide range of business tasks, perhaps at a small/mid-size business
