A Brief Summary of This Position:


This position is responsible for the review and analysis of financial performance of the Brenham site.   This includes the completion of reports, charts and diagrams that provide a basis for comparison and evaluation.  This position is also responsible for providing ad hoc analysis to support financial forecasts, internal management reporting, benchmarking and monitoring of key cost indicators.  The person in this role will work closely with the site personnel to understand and explain performance variances and trends. Other responsibilities include timely and accurate completion of the monthly book close process and the weekly forecasts.


Essential Functions:

  • Participates with the General Manager in establishing goals, objectives, and priorities for this site.
  • Audits, reviews, and evaluates adherence to fiscal lines of authority for this site.
  • Reviews and approves capital equipment and tooling requests, and project expenditures requests.
  • Work with the site personnel to gather data and explanations to support spend and productivity analysis
  • Complete and summarize weekly forecast updates
  • Recommends inventory policy for this site and provide financial input for the production scheduling activities.  Audits inventory transactions.
  • Directs the accounting functions of this site in concert with the Division and Corporate accounting policies and procedures.  These functions include:
    • Cost Accounting (Inventory control & valuation, direct & indirect costs and absorption)
    • Plant accounting (Control of shop floor reporting)
    • Management of accounting information
    • Defines and analyzes operational variances
    • Performs certain monthly site closing activities
  • Develops site profitability analysis, including site forecasting and budgeting (including the Annual Operating Plan).
  • Analyzes the monthly transactions that affect the inventory and expense accruals.
  • Reconcile specific balance sheet accounts and analyze all income statement variances and significant accounts on a monthly basis.  Review and analyze the total operation of this site for performance trends and make observations and recommendations to the General Manager for increased profitability.
  • This position reports into the Plant Manager and has one direct reports and no indirect reports.
  • This role requires minimal travel domestically, and includes overnight stays.

Other Important Details about the Role:


This position is accountable for maintaining the accounting records of the Brenham site, for valuation of its assets, and for the establishment of internal controls. This role works in close coordination and cooperation with the Sr. Director of Finance, NA Steel Operations, the Sr. Director of Finance, NA Engineered Structures as well as the Product Line Managers.  The incumbent is responsible for coordinating the site budgeting efforts including capital budgeting and the review of capital appropriation requests.  The site controller plans, analyzes, interprets, and critiques the appropriate financial and statistical data and reports for the site’s General Manager in order to provide advice on the meaning and usefulness of the information so that operational improvements can be achieved and the measurements of the operating results can be enhanced. 


The incumbent is also expected to recommend changes in financial and control procedures and functional concepts that will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the site’s financial functions.  This includes, but is not limited to, emphasis on management accounting information with emphasis on the timeliness, accurateness, and relevancy of such information. 


The Brenham site performs its financial functions primarily through computerized accounting systems from the IFS ERP system.  Personal computers are used extensively for supplemental analysis and reporting.  Operational forecasts and results are reported to the Division office on a routine basis along with cash flows, asset levels, throughput summaries, and capital budgeting information.  Brenham site departments are measured for performance and spending levels, results are analyzed and suggestions for improvements are made to the Brenham site staff and supervisors.


Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Preferred Bachelors in Business Administration with emphasis in accounting or finance with 6+ years relevant experience or Associates Degree with 8+ years relevant experience or 10+ years of relevant experience
  • 5+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment with an annual revenue base of $50M or greater
  • 5+ years of experience in cost accounting and inventory reporting and analysis
  • 2+ years of general ledger accounting experience including account reconciliations, journal entries, and a basic understanding of internal controls
  • Strong cost accounting skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Highly motivated and self-directed worker with the ability to work independently within the context of a complex matrix organization

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • Experience with IFS systems preferred
  • MBA or other advanced degree preferred
  • Certifications: CPA, CIA  preferred

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an office setting; however, incumbent may be required to go into the production or shipping/receiving areas.  The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in person conversations or meetings.   Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  Travel as needed less than 5-10%.


The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer.  The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk when moving about the office.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds in working with large files, binders, and boxes of paper.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
