A Brief Summary of This Position:

Valmont is seeking a highly motivated and talented Technical Sales Engineer for our Valmont Torrent Engineering Business. Torrent Engineering is a Northern Indiana manufacturer of custom water pumping systems. The Technical Sales Engineer will be in charge with assisting in overall sales and account development activities within an assigned territory. This individual will work with the Torrent Co-President and Technical Sales Engineers to learn and maintain a variety of sales forecasting tools, review customer inquiries, insure a complete understanding of specifications and requirements, prepare technical sales presentation focusing on the company’s value proposition, and establish and maintain new and existing customers. The individual in this role with work with various departments to gain knowledge and understanding of corporate policies and procedures in pricing and quote preparation to customers.


Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for establishing and cultivating a strong working relationship with customers; make regular calls to key existing or prospective customers to understand their needs, educating their engineering staff, and assessing the business environment
  • Establish positive and collaborative working relationships with internal technical sales engineers, manufacturing operations, applicable vendors and suppliers to ensure customer’s expectations are met
  • Meet and exceed the expectations of the customer through every facet of the sales and service process
  • Negotiate pricing, quantities, and agreements with customers; communicate changes in customer demands internally; collect and retain information on competitive pricing and services offed in the marketplace for the company’s products; communicate changes in customer demands internally
  • Recommend marketing strategies to efficiently and cost effectively promote the company’s products to prospective customers
  • Prospect for new customers and solicit sales from existing customers of new or additional products via telephone, email, or in person; prepare pricing and present quotes; set final new prices, margins, quotes on new products or services
  • Maintain awareness of competitor activities; employ counter measures to beat or contain competition
  • Meet and exceed sales and gross profit targets for assigned territory
  • Actively strategize with management on sales tactics
  • Research and resolve all customer problems and requests, define best products as a solution; field and bring resolution complaints concerning billing or products
  • Provide technical support to customers using positive internal collaboration and problem resolution on behalf of your customers to meet and exceed their expectations; document complaints and/or feedback from customers in a timely manner; initiate customer credits when required
  • Work with customer service, operations and supply chain as needed to ensure order fulfillment expectations are met
  • Utilize CRM complete trip reporting and internal sales relationship communication in a timely manner; ensure travel expense reporting is accurate and timely manner
  • This role requires up to 15% travel (internationally/domestically), including overnight stays


Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 3+ years relevant experience OR Associates Degree with 5+ years relevant experience OR 7+ years of relevant experience
  • Previous experience as a product representative or sales representative
  • Basic understanding of engineering principles and ability to read and understand material specifications and drawings
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including: Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Demonstrated strengths in interpersonal skills, including the ability to adapt and professionally communicate with a variety of people in a positive manner to build and cultivate lasting business relationships
  • Flexible - can conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines
  • Decisive problem-solving ability and capability to assess people and situations with accuracy
  • Confident self-starter with integrity and accountability
  • Team player and the ability to work collaboratively with others from all areas of Valmont

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Preferred Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or relevant field
  • Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD and ACT contract database
  • Sales oriented mindset is preferred
  • Engineering or manufacturing experience in pump industry preferred
  • Prior Lean experience is a plus

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an office setting; however, incumbent may be required to go into the production, shipping/receiving areas or infrequently into the field environment where product is being installed. Domestic and International travel represents up to 15% of the work schedule and includes transportation by both vehicle and by air. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. Overtime will be required as needed. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk when moving about the office, production or field environments. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds in working with office materials and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required in this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
