A Brief Summary of This Position:

Plan, direct, and monitor all sourcing activities of the materials and services Valmont sources to satisfy expected standards of reliability, timing, and cost.  Develop commodity strategies to support business initiatives. Optimize total cost and network with Valmont facilities to build and maintain a robust funnel of initiatives. Responsible to negotiate cost and terms with suppliers to drive improved cash flow, mitigate risk and ensure supply base possesses adequate capacity to support Valmont’s demand. Support cross-functional teams (e.g., operations, engineering, quality, product management, etc.) by ensuring timely supply of quality material and via support of various leadership-driven initiatives. Fully responsible for the performance of suppliers within assigned categories and for coordinating activities with the Global Sourcing team. This position reports to the Sr. Director, Global Sourcing and functions as an individual contributor with no direct or indirect reports.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for all matters related to cost of supply for assigned categories.  Establish and implement strategies and lead sourcing activities (e-sourcing events, negotiations, data analysis, projects, contract lifecycle management, supplier development and selection, data management, VA/VE, etc.) to optimize costs, working capital, and terms while minimizing financial and operational risk. 
  • Assure material flow of assigned categories into respective Valmont sites.  Responsible for supplier performance, capacity, and to work with Supplier Development to develop poor performing suppliers.  Implement and maintain KPIs to monitor and improve performance of managed supply base.  Conduct recurring business reviews with assigned suppliers.  Ensure suppliers are compliant to Valmont’s supply agreements and requirements.
  • Build stakeholder alignment to support initiatives.  Identify and develop suppliers to support new product development, as needed/required.

Other Important Details about the Role:

  • Ability to travel up to 50%, including both domestic and international overnight stays
  • Manage direct material commodities (i.e., metal categories)
  • Manage supplier relationships to meet Valmont requirements for safety, quality, delivery, productivity, and other business terms
  • Negotiate with suppliers to establish competitive contracts and beneficial agreements                           
  • Monitor indexed portions of material spend and make recommendations to management regarding hedges, locks, forward purchases, etc.
  • Actively participate in monthly score card and project reporting as well as annual strategic plan reporting
  • Participate in the Material Council process and reporting cadence
  • Reinforce the company’s continuous improvement culture promoting communication, shared learning, intelligent risk-taking, creative problem-solving and accountability for failures and successes
  • Lead and direct value engineering and cross-functional team activities
  • Support and lead supply optimization efforts to include but not limited to consolidation, dual sourcing, rationalization, risk mitigation, etc.
  • Support supplier scorecard efforts and interact with assigned suppliers to improve and build upon relations and performance
  • Support supplier lean development activities

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Preferred Bachelor’s Degree  (Supply Chain, Engineering, Science, or Finance) with 6+ years relevant experience OR Associate’s Degree with 8+ years relevant experience OR 10+ years relevant experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication across regions, functions, and levels
  • Excellent negotiating capability
  • Collaboration and influence management skills; works effectively in a matrixed organization
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and MRP/supply chain systems
  • Commodity management experience with high dollar spend
  • Experience in managing commodities that are directly tied to material indices
  • Proven track record of supplier development, management, and sustained productivity
  • Strong financial acumen
  • Self-starter, ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to develop and recommend material and process alternatives and work collaboratively with Engineering and Product Management teams
  • Be able to develop and execute initiatives
  • Be able to build and maintain effective work relationships, both internal and external, and establish credibility with business partners

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in supply chain, engineering, science, or business
  • CPSM (ISM) or CSCP (APICS) certification
  • Bilingual communication capabilities
