A Brief Summary of This Position:

Valmont is seeking an organized, self-motivated, excellent storyteller to act as an internal communications intern. Excellent communication skills, knowledge of proper spelling, grammar and Associate Press (AP) Stylebook guidelines, familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office including SharePoint and strong attention to detail are essential to succeed in this position. Valmont’s internal communications intern supports the internal communications manager by writing, editing, proofreading, scheduling and tracking the performance of internal content. You will develop a portfolio of writing samples, refine your writing skills for different audiences and gain valuable real-world experience in developing internal content.

Valmont’s internship program provides a hands-on learning experience through project work, leadership development, job shadowing and interaction with senior leadership.

Essential Functions:

  • This position will report to the Internal Communications Manager
  • Flexible schedule however must be able to work a minimum of 15-20 hours during the school year and 30+ hours/week in the summer
  • Draft and edit a variety of communications (internal memos, intranet articles, blog posts, press releases, newsletters and other materials)
  • Support the development and execution of communications plans and tasks
  • Build relationships across the organization to identify and understand company messaging and strategy
  • Research information related to a variety of subjects
  • Proofreading and editing assistance
  • Complete assignments on time and work within tight deadlines
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Student pursuing a degree in Marketing, Communication, Journalism, Public Relations or other relevant fields
  • Excellent communication skills including attention given to proper spelling and grammar
  • Knowledge of AP Stylebook guidelines
  • Adobe Creative Suite
  • Microsoft Office, including SharePoint
  • Passion for writing
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Extremely organized, self-motivated, and responds positively to feedback
  • Professional demeanor with an eagerness to learn and work with several partners across the global enterprise
  • Flexible with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an office setting. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. No travel requirements for this position. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
