A Brief Summary of This Position
This position ensures the accuracy of work-in-process, raw material, and finished good inventory records using cycle counting and transaction auditing tools. It is expected that this position demonstrates the core values of the Valmont and shows respect toward others. The Inventory Control Specialist is a team player with excellent organizational skills and a strong commitment to continuous improvement.
Essential Functions
Issuing of materials to shop orders.
Reconcile actual counts with specific work in process and raw material locations and inventory balances.
Review inventory data for accuracy and compliance with procedures.
Report results of audits and conditions causing errors and omissions in inventory transactions to appropriate management.
Identify parts and/or specific locations of material to be audited and analyzed.
Report incorrect or inadequate part identification found during audit process to the department lead or supervisor.
Report damage or unusable inventory found during audit process to appropriate personnel.
Assure that inventory transactions are processed appropriately.
Perform follow-up and approval for work in process (WIP) audit adjustments.
Identify and adjust cumulative work order errors.
Perform special transactions for alternate routings and bills of material.
Perform inter-site transactions and audits as required.
Analyze, document, investigate and report inventory discrepancies to identify reasons for variance.
Inform and train operating personnel regarding inventory control methods and procedures as directed.
Provide recommendations for innovations and improvements to all inventory processes, procedures and controls.
Review QAD item set-up, including bill of material and routing to check for accuracy when resolving inventory problems.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
1+ year of relevant work experience.
The ability to carry, lift or move up to 50 lbs. although the most frequent weight manipulated is under 20 lbs.
Full proficiency in the use of a calculator, weigh counting scale and imperial tape measure.
The ability to work in various climates including outdoors during inclement conditions.
The ability to pass forklift truck requirements within 90 days.
Excellent communication, organizational and prioritization skills.
Exposure to a Lean manufacturing environment and the ability to work on a Lean Team.
Basic skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
The ability to work as a team member with production, planning and accounting groups reporting variances and identifying causes for variances.
The ability to function independently.
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications
The ability to effectively interface with supervisors, set up and lead personnel, shop floor employees, production control, accounting and purchasing personnel.
Educational Background
Read, write and speak clearly in English.
Add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
Must have full proficiency in the of a calculator, weigh counting scale and tape measure.
Able to perform MS Office computer functions/transactions including Excel and Outlook.
Have excellent communication, organizational and prioritization skills.
Job Training Skill Development
Able to execute inventory transactions in various applications.
Pass forklift truck requirements within 90 days.
Participation with the continuous improvement process.
Able to identify parts from written description or blueprint references.
Train on Irrigation inventory processes and procedures.
Performs follow-up and approval for WIP audit adjustments.
Performs inter-site transactions and audits as required.
Performs special transactions for alternate routings and bills of material.
Able to train other employees on inventory processes and procedures.
Decision Making
Inventory control is an auditing function that detects problems/errors and provides recommendations for improvement and resolution. This position must be able to analyze and document inventory related problems, whether caused by the system, procedures or other causes. Decisions made will directly affect the on-time shipment of customer and inter-site orders. It will also impact external inventory audit requirements of the company’s Independent Public Accountants. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. A very high degree of self-motivation and organization is a must with demonstrated attention to detail maintaining accurate records on a daily basis. In addition, coordinating with team members to make the most efficient use of time. Inventory control includes continuously monitoring inventories on a regular basis, including evaluating the adequacy of inventory-related systems, security, storage and handling. Classes of inventory are identified, monitored and periodically counted on continuous cycle throughout the year. In-process inventory in each cell is reconciled to the inventory process in open cumulative manufacturing orders. All problems must be identified, resolved and reported in a timely and efficient manner without delaying production, material handling, issues and receipts. Physical count also requires that all inventory transactions were properly recorded and processed. This includes ensuring that cut-off procedures and purging of transactions are also properly recorded and controlled and that recommendations for related problem resolution are reported.
Physical Effort
During the work day, the incumbent is required to walk, stand, stoop, bend, squat, lift and move objects in order to count material. The work day also involves sedentary tasks such as operating a computer and attending meetings. This position may be required to travel to local sites to help perform inventory and other operational activities although overnights stays are rare.
Working Conditions
Some warehouse and shop indoor work with varying temperatures. Some outdoor working conditions with abnormal temperatures which include heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, etc. Employee works around material stacked overhead height. There is exposure to moving mechanical parts as well as high noise levels. Smoke produced from weld processes is also a factor to consider with this position.
Hazards
This job requires handling metal objects, some of which have sharp edges. There is a risk of cuts, scrapes and abrasions mainly to the hand as well as sunburns from working outside. Some employee may find allergies to solvents or coolants used around the area in which they work. This job has exposure to other occupational health and accident hazards such as eye injury from dust and dirt. There is frequent pivoting, walking, bending and lifting during the work shift. For the most part, the accident hazard level is low to moderate and any probable injury may come from working with sharp metal edges or from performing improper lifting or moving of equipment without exercising reasonable care and observing safety regulations. Occasional exposure to tripping or slipping is present and employees must use caution when working around ice, snow and wet surfaces. Employee must wear PPE in all areas as required.
