A Brief Summary of This Position
The Manitenance Manager position reports directly to the Plant Manager for Fort Meade. The Maintenance Managers oversees the implementation of all plant improvement projects and ensures that all plant, property & equipment are kept in excellent working condition. Additionally, this person is also responsible for supporting site leadership in the accomplishment of the plant’s safety mission and objectives. This individual must have a passion for continuous improvement of facilities, equipment and safety. This position functions of the preventive and repair maintenance, electrical, electronic and mechanical work for the Fort Meade Utility plant with proficiency.

SKILL
Educational Background
Requires adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing of whole numbers and fractions to perform calculations and conversions to and from metric and English measurement standards. Must possess adequate communication and interpersonal skills to successfully interact with other employees. Must display an aptitude for problem solving and the ability to plan for potential problems or needs.
Job Training Skill Development
Maintenance Manager must demonstrate a minimum acceptable level of equipment specific knowledge within 12 months of on the job experience.
Decision Making
Must be able to make decisions whether or not equipment can run safely or needs immediate attention for repairs. The Maintenance Manager should be able to make recommendations to supervision and prioritize necessary repairs. Service manuals establish standard procedures for some decision making. Troubleshooting of pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical equipment may require independent judgment at the work site or at additional Valmont sites requesting maintenance assistance.

The Maintenance Manager spends time climbing, lifting, bending, kneeling, crawling, pulling, stretching, and working in confined spaces and awkward positions, as well as working at heights. Incumbent handles gearboxes on top of machines, changing brakes, motors on cranes, etc. The average weight of objects is 30 pounds. Incumbent spends 75% of his / her workday standing or walking, 10% bending or kneeling, 10% stooping, and 5% climbing.

Mental and Visual Effort

Typical injury to others could consist of electrical shock, cuts, bruises, burns, etc. Physical injuries could result from poor installations and repairs of machinery or improper use in handling or lifting equipment. Alert workmanship and caution can prevent injuries, such as broken fingers, arms, legs and / or crushed limbs. Responsible for other personnel assisting on the job.
Each employee is responsible for learning and applying all provided safety training as outlined by the company and department safety representative and / or supervisor. Keeping safety in the forefront in the daily performance of job duties includes personal safety, safety of others in the department and safekeeping of all company resources. As a Maintenance Manager, the incumbent must complete Lock Out-Tag Out training.
Actively participates in department safety; demonstrates excellent safety practices and behaviors and conforms to all Valmont safety policies and procedures.

JOB CONDITIONS
Working Conditions
The Maintenance Manager works in all conditions that exist in the plant. Conditions range from clean shop work exposure to odors, drafts, wet conditions, concrete, grease, dust, and noise. The work environment consists of smoke and irritating particulate impurities, fumes from machinery, tanks, and large quantities of windblown dust produced as by-product from our processes. In addition, the nature of the industry results in extreme heat in the summer (typically 10-15 degrees above outdoor temperature), material results in damp, working conditions during cooler months. These conditions range from severe to mild and can happen daily in any combination.
Hazards
Potential hazards include falls to the ground or from drop deck trailers due to slick working conditions and heat exhaustion or aggravations created by blowing dust and ash. In addition, constant exposure to such hazards as burns, cuts, contusions of various degrees and eye injuries make the possibility for incidents high even under the best conditions.
