Brief Summary
The Maintenance Supervisor is accountable for the supervision and coordination of the Maintenance Department. The incumbent works closely with the Managers/Supervisors of the site. The incumbent is responsible for managing various resources during emergency situations such as electrical faults, air/gas/waterline breaks, severe weather-related issues, etc. The position reports into the Sr. Plant Manager and has up to 25 direct reports.
Essential Functions:
- Maintain accurate files in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Administration standards and the Environmental Protection Agency standards.
- Administer the preventive maintenance program for all production equipment, mobile equipment and facilities.
- Organizes and controls the use of maintenance resources to improve maintenance costs and equipment reliability.
- Instills an orientation for safety, environmental compliance and quality service in all aligned personnel.
- Manages and controls the use of outside contractors/services to economically supplement in-house resources.
- Selects and implements maintenance systems, programs and controls to economically manage maintenance resources and monitor maintenance effectiveness.
- Works in conjunction with Maintenance Project Manager, General Manager, Operations Manager, and Engineering on construction and equipment upgrade/replacement projects.
- Selects and schedules training to continuously upgrade the skill and proficiency of all assigned personnel and economically expand the scope of maintenance capabilities.
- Maintains harmonious and supportive relationships with all staff members.
- Must be able to work in the Plant a minimum of 5 days per week and have ability to be on call as needed
- Implements work schedule to maximize utilization of manpower, machines, and materials. Assigns work to maintenance employees.
- Assisting employee teams in problem solving, project justification, and project implementation.
- Defines results and standards of performance expected of assigned personnel. Monitors performance and takes corrective action as necessary.
- Continuously observes for proper operating of assigned equipment. Recommends new or improved machines, equipment, and facilities as required.
- Maintain accurate machine information and history files.
- Improve equipment reliability through operational and maintenance changes or design improvements.
- Maintain a spare parts inventory.
- This position requires an understanding of our hazardous waste management.
- Promotes a continuous productivity improvement climate that encourages assigned employees to submit suggestions for improved operations. Implements worthwhile ideas and keeps employees informed of status. Keeps plant leadership advised of employee requests, complaints, and suggestions, and provides prompt "feedback" to employees.
- Administers company policies in a firm, fair, and consistent manner. Works closely with Human Resources to administer personnel policy and procedures.
- Maintains good housekeeping and safe working conditions in assigned area. Reports and investigates all incidents in a timely manner.
- Trains new employees into department/company activities and safety procedures. Introduces employees to safety representative. Prior to the end of probationary period, recommends approval, rejection, or probationary period extension.
- Be aware of and assist in the attainment of division and company goals and objectives.
- Demonstrates a commitment to the Valmont Safety Mission and corporate safety’s Critical Success Factors process through:
- Learning and applying all provided safety training as outlined by the company and department safety representative and/or supervisor
- Keeping safety at the forefront in the daily performance of job duties including personal safety, safety of others in the department and safekeeping of all company resources
- Enforcing safety regulations in a firm and consistent manner through safety meetings once a month.
Other Important Details
- Responsible for determining resource requirements, training needs, and internal control procedures that address relevant objectives.
- Make recommendations on controls, monitor their application with processes, and meet with senior management to report on the operation of internal control.
- Maintain the appropriate professional competencies and evaluate the capacity, staffing levels, and competency of the functional area’s personnel.
- Accountable to senior management for responsibilities in internal control.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's degree or Technical Degree in Industrial Maintenance or related field with a minimum of four years relevant experience
- Two years of previous work experience in a leadership role
- The ability to travel as needed.
- Basic understanding of engineering knowledge and ability to understand engineering drawings.
- Demonstrated strong communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Ability to interact with all levels of the organization.
- Excellent computer skills in Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, Microsoft Project or similar).
- Demonstrated ability to use independent judgement and discretion requiring minimum supervision.
- Excellent understanding of manufacturing/facility equipment operations.
- Understanding of OSHA standards for General Industry.
- Understanding of Facility Security issues and operations.
Highly Qualified Candidates
- Bachelor’s degree in industrial maintenance Mechanics, Industrial Systems Technology, Maintenance Engineering or related field
- The ability to determine expenditure budgets of jobs, seeing to the appropriate use of equipment, facilities and materials
- The ability to compare relative cost with potential benefits
- Previous supervisory experience in a manufacturing or logistic operations environment
- Practical hands-on experience in Lean Manufacturing
