Compensation: $28.26 per hour

A Brief Summary of This Position

This is an individual contributor position responsible for performing most functions of the preventive and repair maintenance, electrical, electronic and mechanical work for the Coatings Division with proficiency.  The Maintenance Technician 2 isalso  responsible for fabrication of fixtures using welding, cutting and brazing.  Additional duties include identifying and adding new and efficient preventive maintenance tasks and working safely with the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).  Incumbent must adhere to Valmont safety training policies. The Maintenance Technician 2 performs preventive maintenance and repairs on all plant equipment and facilities with a learned level of proficiency.  This person is also responsible for maintaining and repairing plant equipment, including pneumatic and mechanical systems, clutches, brakes, power transmission components, combustion engines, and electrical and hydraulic systems.  The incumbent performs basic electrical work and fabricates fixtures with limited to no instruction. This person is responsible for recording labor and materials used on each repair and provides some guidance, instruction and training to the Maintenance Technician 1.

Essential Functions:

  • Test, inspect, repair, troubleshoot and re-assemble basic plant equipment, components, and systems including but not limited to overhead bridge cranes, hoists, gear boxes, forklifts, straddle trucks, shag trucks, company vehicles, pneumatic and mechanical systems, power transmission components, combustion engines, boiler systems, and electrical and hydraulic systems
  • Perform basic electrical work, and assist in highly skilled electrical work
  • Fabricate fixtures using welding, cutting, brazing, and surface hardening applications
  • Communicate with supervisor and other maintenance and production team members via e-mail, phone, and face-to-face
  • Responsible for working with small hand tools including tape measures, micrometers, saws, drills, riveters, and nail guns and  maintaining tools and equipment
  • Must be company trained and authorized to operate powered industrial trucks, aerial platforms and bridge cranes
  • Must be company trained and authorized in arc flash safety, confined space entry, hazardous energy control and fall protection
  • Complete record logs including labor, repairs made, equipment, and use of materials on the computer
  • Ability to fabricate and repair metal structures and components
  • Responsible for reading basic blueprints
  • Climb and work from ladders, aerial platforms , bridge cranes, and roofs in excess of 80 feet
  • Must be able to distinguish colors
  • Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and work in a non-temperature controlled environment, as well as with exposure to outdoors

Important Details about the Role

  • Knowledgeable with plant equipment
  • Knowledgeable with basic testing, troubleshooting, disassembly, inspecting, precise measuring, repair and re-assembly of all plant equipment and components with limited instruction
  • Identify and report equipment abnormalities and safety hazards
  • Must be company tested and authorized to operate a forklift
  • Assist in training and provide some guidance and instruction to the Maintenance Tech 1
  • Assist in general plant clean up and housekeeping
  • Domestic travel overnight up to 25% annually to assist with maintenance at other plant locations
  • This position reports to the Maintance Manager and has no direct reports

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • One (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience
  • The ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions in English
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Communicate problems or needs to departmental supervision
  • Communicate and interact with coworkers in a professional  manner
  • Pay attention to detail and follow work instructions
  • High awareness for safety with the ability to wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and work in a non-temperature controlled environment, as well as with exposure to outdoors
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, although most frequent lift is up to 30 pounds
  • Ability to be company trained and authorized to operate powered industrial trucks, aerial platforms and bridge cranes in arc flash safety, confined space entry, hazardous energy control and fall protection
  • Ability to spend 75% of workday standing or walking, 10% bending or kneeling, 10% stooping, and 5% climbing
  • Climb and work from ladders, aerial platforms , bridge cranes, and roofs in excess of 80 feet
  • Must be able to distinguish colors
  • The ability to work one (1) to two (2) shifts of overtime per week, as needed
  • Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • Actively pursuing an Associate’s or Technical degree in Industrial Maintenance or related field
  • The ability to interpret and fabricate components based on basic blueprints or specification sheets
  • ­­One year of experience with basic troubleshooting pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems
  • One year of experience basic welding/fabricating metal structures/components
  • Climb and work from ladders, man lifts, bridge cranes, and roofs in excess of 80 feet
  • Work in adverse conditions:  wet, hot, dusty, dirty or cold
  • Industrial boiler certification
  • Structural welding certification
  • Pipe welding certification
