A Brief Summary of This Position:

The Material Handler 4 is responsible for transporting products and materials within the manufacturing areas and maintaining material storage as directed by manufacturing and inventory control procedures.  This position will also perform miscellaneous material handling, as needed.

Essential Functions:

  • Supply manufacturing work stations with raw materials from storage inventory locations
  • Locate and gather parts
  • Place materials in their proper storage inventory location
  • Write part descriptions and quantity on outer boxes, as needed
  • Receive incoming material shipments
  • Load and unload trucks, as needed
  • Report material damages to Lead, Shipping Supervisor, Manufacturing Manager &/or Plant Manager
  • Verify material and product inventory levels
  • Report material shortages to Lead, Shipping Supervisor &/or Manufacturing Manager.
  • Work safely with the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and adhere to Valmont safety policies
  • Lead by example to promote and nurture a safety minded environment
  • Support improvement efforts and seek continuous improvements within the Production department

Other Important Details about the Role:

  • This position reports directly to the Shipping Supervisor

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Minimum 1 year on-the-job experience operating a forklift within a fast-paced manufacturing environment
  • Ability to accurately perform basic mathematical calculations
  • Previous Forklift certification or the ability to acquire a forklift certification
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines associated with working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
  • Ability to read, comprehend and interpret work instructions, drawings &/or blueprints
  • Previous experience using a tape measure and gauges to accurately measure parts and materials
  • Ability to physically lift, push or pull up to 50 pounds

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • Inventory control experience
  • Ability to solve problems with high attention to detail and work in a fast-paced environment subject to specific deadlines
  • A person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is primarily performed in a manufacturing plant environment with exposure to all conditions that exist in the plant such as dust, dirt, grease, heat, fumes, odors, wet conditions, and cold as well as noise levels above 80 decibels.  Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  In addition, the nature of the industry results in extreme heat in the summer (typically 10-15 degrees above outdoor temperature), and melting snow off of incoming material results in damp, cold working conditions in the winter.  These conditions range from severe to mild and can happen daily in any combination.  Encounters typical environment and risks associated with steel yards, weld shops and manufacturing facilities.  Many aspects of this role are physical and the incumbent must be able to lift, push, &/or pull up to 50 pounds by hand.  The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands, and arms as well as balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb and work from ladders. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to distinguish colors, close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.  Physical demands include operating a forklift for an extended period of time each shift and climbing in and out of a forklift numerous times each shift.
