A Brief Summary of This Position

This management role is primarily responsible for driving improvement by leading and managing Total Quality Management. The incumbent must be involved with identification and resolution efforts as they pertain to Utility product quality issues and the development of quality procedures. This includes implementing programs and processes, developing quality procedures, conducting quality training, and communicating the results of the quality effort for the plant. It requires a broad understanding of the Utility product, how it is manufactured, including inspection requirements for each product feature, and a strong understanding of how the product is to be installed and function. This Manager has to work collaboratively to determine root cause and effective long-term corrective action and be actively involved in resolving external and internal vendor problems. Additionally, this position requires proficiency in three areas of Non-destructive Testing (NDT): Visual (VT), Magnetic Particle (PT), and Ultrasonic (UT), along with coating application and inspection knowledge. As with many of the roles within the Quality Assurance (QA) organization, this position may be called upon to support other events, such as internal product and process audits, customer pre-production manufacturing evaluations, technical sales assistance, etc.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct supervising functions to both direct reporting staff and other team members according to overall company policy.
  • Ensure product quality issues (supplier, factory, and field failures) are investigated in a timely manner and actions are implemented to prevent their recurrence.
  • Support of Valmont Lean initiative through participation in 5S audits, Lean team facilitation, Lean team membership, and membership on the Material Review Board.
  • Manage the internal audit system and ensure improvements are sustained, and internal quality audits are performed.
  • Perform inspections on supplier prototypes and production samples using recognized sampling methods (ANSI Z1.4) to ensure they meet Valmont engineering and quality requirements, inspection records are maintained, and results are reported.
  • Ensure that quality-related databases (scrap, deviation, corrective/preventive action) are managed and maintained, data are made available to relevant parties, and root cause analysis of trends and actions are implemented to prevent their recurrence.
  • Manage the gauge calibration system for assigned sites to ensure the accuracy of measuring devices for those locations.
  • Ensure controlled documents (procedures, work instructions, and records) are managed and maintained.
  • Building ‘quality capability’ through training of operators in operations and methods, culture development and role modeling.
  • Manage all people matters relating to the QA team developing and supporting as appropriate (motivating, delegating, performance management, appraisals, recruiting and identifying and arranging job-related development training).
  • Manage and achieve the team budget and all prevailing team KPIs.
  • Develop, maintain and coordinate monthly quality reports with trend analysis for management.
  • Monitor inspection results to ensure product/process quality is maintained identifying where documentation and actual product specifications do not match. Identify areas where inspection strategies need to be revised.
  • Analyze and evaluate manufacturing processes to identify improvement opportunities and review new processes. Establish procedures for review sign-off of changes to products or processes.
  • Oversee management of third-party contractors and other Valmont technical support (e.g., welder).
  • Routinely monitor compliance with customer specifications and Utility work instructions and specifications and the maintenance of all Industry registrations.
  • Conduct business on behalf of the company in full compliance with the laws of the many jurisdictions in which we operate.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds, although the most frequent lift is up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to perform manual labor while in the field, wear all necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and work in an environment where there is exposure to various weather elements.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Bachelor of Science in related field.
  • Familiarity with lean and statistical quality tools including Pareto, histogram, process mapping, process capability, and SPC.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, problem-solving, planning, communication, and motivational skills.
  • Ability to interpret standard U.S. and metric measurements and use industry-standard mathematical equations and formulas.
  • Ability to write legible reports and summarize findings and read and comprehend technical data and blueprints.
  • Thoughtful communicator; measured in interactions with customers, third party representatives, co-workers, and other contacts.
  • Strong computer skills using MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) QMS, IFS, QCAR/CRS.
  • Willingness to travel and manage travel expenses.

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Preferred Qualifications

  • American Welding Society Certified Weld Inspector credentials.
  • American Society for Quality (ASQ) Certified Manager of Quality and Organizational Excellence, ASQ Quality Engineer, or ASQ Quality Auditor certifications.
  • Five years of experience working in a Quality Control, Quality Assurance group as an inspector, or in non-destructive testing.
  • SNT-TC-1A (American Society of Nondestructive Testing recommended practice number) VT Level II, MT Level II, and UT Level II.
  • AWS-CWI (American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector).
  • NACE (National Association of Corrosion Engineers) Level 1 or 2.

Working Environment and Physical Efforts

Work is performed in a factory setting, with most of the time being spent moving around different areas of manufacturing and shipping areas. The incumbent is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. This position will be exposed to all hazards located at manufacturing sites including noise, fumes, excessive heat/cold, dust, welding arc, all chemicals associated with the manufacturing areas, fire, smoke, unstable debris and confined spaces. Environment is fast-paced and demanding most of the time. This position will require long days to support the Quality initiative for a four shift, and seven-day-a-week operation. The employee is frequently required to use hands to fingers, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrist rests. The incumbent must occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds in working with large files, binders, computer equipment and shop equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
