A Brief Summary of This Position:

This position is accountable for the analysis and reporting of large site financial data including sales, cost of sales, margin analysis, inventory valuation and reconciliation, manufacturing performance, manufacturing variances, income statements, balance sheets, operational variances, capital expenditures, forecast/planning and special projects.  The individual is expected to prepare and analyze the site’s annual financial plan, as well as develop, review and maintain control procedures regarding financial and operational controls of the business unit and prepare/review monthly general ledger account reconciliations.

Essential Functions:

  • This position reports to the VP, North America Controllership with dotted-line responsibilities to the Plant Manager
  • The position supports a large plant, generally with revenue of $75M or more
  • The site controller manages one direct report, the site senior accountant
  • Prepare monthly/quarterly/annual financial statements, business activity reports, financial position forecasts, annual budgets, and/or reports required by regulatory agencies
  • Establishes rigorous and disciplined accounting and internal controls.  The incumbent is responsible and accountable for:
    • Ensuring financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flows) are compliant with US GAAP and accurate without exception
    • Adherence to all Valmont financial policies
    • Accurate inventory valuation including periodic cycle counts and valuation in compliance with LIFO, accurate standard costs, accounting for standard cost variances, and inventory reserves compliant with Valmont policy
    • Accurate and timely customer invoicing
    • Revenue recognition in accordance with US GAAP
    • Receivables valuation including maintenance of subledgers, reconciling items and reserves in compliance with policy
    • Warranty accruals, reflective of known and/or expected failures and costs to remediate
    • Expense accruals
    • Payables, accrued liabilities and debt balances
    • Balance sheet reconciliations, including maintaining records of the supporting detail and business activities that validate the balance sheet amount
    • SOX controls.  Includes ensuring all controls have an owner and are self-tested.   
    • Ensure all journal entries are properly supported and documented
  • Collaborate closely with the site operations finance/controllers to build out reporting for daily, weekly, and monthly needs related to various operational measurements.
  • Manages working capital
    • Works with operations to manage inventory, ensuring material is ordered when needed and supported by documented sales orders, contract or forecasts
    • Works with the business to ensure working capital is sufficient to fund best-in-class business as well as cognizant of need for cash flow
  • Assist in preparing, implementing, and monitoring the Annual Operating Plan and various financial reports/statistics to ensure adherence to short and long-range financial goals.  Monitor performance to plan throughout the year and communicate variances to Plant Manager and site operational staff
  • Administer policies and procedures supporting the Plant Manager and operational staff to ensure maximum productivity and throughput, reduce operating cost, support Lean activities and ensure the safest possible plant operations
  • Oversees monthly Accounting close activities in accordance with established procedures to ensure timely completion and accurate information
  • Monitor facility’s profitability, margins, inventory transactions while identifying problems and potential problems and offer solutions to resolve issues
  • Perform statistical analysis to determine trends, estimates, and significant changes to site performance and present findings
  • Able to effectively communicate with employees, outside vendors and agencies
  • Maintain current knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, federal and state policies and directives, and monitor compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Conduct or coordinate audits of company accounts and financial transactions to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements and statutes
  • Enforce Accountability – Hold yourself and others accountable for maintaining an ethical and competent work environment through example setting, reporting, and resolution of any ineffective control or unethical conduct
  • Provide direction and assistance to other organizational units regarding accounting and budgeting policies and procedures, and efficient control and utilization of financial resources
  • This role requires up to 10% travel domestically, including overnight stays

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Preferred Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or equivalent with 7+ years of experience, or associates degree with 9+ years, or 11+ years of experience.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Strong analytical, thinking and reasoning skills
  • Detail and goal oriented
  • Strong initiative and ability to make decisions, take action and solve problems
  • Leadership abilities to influence others to perform their jobs effectively and to be responsible for making decisions
  • Sound judgement skills
  • Ability to work in a matrix environment
  • Responsible – ability to hold oneself accountable or answerable for one’s conduct

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • CPA
  • 4+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Working knowledge of Accounting software and manufacturing ERP (SAGE, IFS)
