Shift Available: 1st Shift - Monday-Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm

Compensation: $25.90 per hour

A Brief Summary of This Position

This incumbent supports the material handling area with emphasis on inventory accuracy of the store room, the receiving of vendor and unprocessed parts, as well as the issuing and movement of materials to manufacturing and outside operating sources.  The incumbent will inspect various supplies and equipment and ensure proper processes and compliance standards are followed and report deficiencies to ensure the highest possible revenue for Valmont.  The incumbent will be responsible for operating various industrial equipment and tools to create the maximum efficiency for the department and company.  The environment is fast-past, high volume and requires a strong attention to detail, accuracy and decision making capability.  The incumbent will service various departments within Valmont through this role.

Essential Functions

  • Ensure accuracy for incoming parts to verify part number, size, quantity and inspect for damage.
  • Operate material handling  equipment including machines such as cranes, straddle truck, forklift and shag truck.
  • Operate industrial trucks or tractors equipped to move materials around a warehouse, storage yard or plant.
  • Operate small hand tools - tape measures, saws, drills, riveters, and banders equipment.
  • Performs and oversees the receiving of raw material and purchased parts.
  • Performs inspections of materials for proper stacking and loading and move tag accuracy. 
  • Performs audits and ensures accurate inventory counts.
  • Bands, bundles and packages parts using proper storage techniques.
  • Oversees the training of other Material Handlers.
  • Maintains good housekeeping, safety, and quality practices.
  • Assist within other areas of Valmont as needed.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Three plus years of related work experience.
  • Strong self-starter.
  • Operates with minimal supervision.
  • Working knowledge of forklift traffic regulations such as over height, over wide, and over weight.
  • Ability to climb in to the forklift, stoop, crouch and move about the shop and yard areas.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds and repeatedly lift 20 pounds throughout the shift.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions in the English language.
  • Ability to read specifications, bills of material, and blueprints.
  • Working knowledge of e-mail.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, planning, communication, and follow through skills.
  • Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy while working in a fast-paced environment with multiple distractions.
  • Ability to work over ten hours a week in overtime when required for business needs.
  • Passion and integrity with the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results.
  • Oversees and assists the training of less experienced staff as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • The ability to operate overhead cranes, forklifts, straddle trucks, shag trucks, side loaders and weigh counting scales.
  • Ability to read, understand, and write to the metric system.

Educational Background

  • Basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
  • Use an imperial tape measure.
  • Able to communicate orally and in writing in English.
  • Able to comprehend simple blueprints or process sheets.
  • Able to use a computer to enter production data and perform time keeping functions.

Job Training Skill Development

This job calls for the employee to have good attention to detail and accuracy when it comes to inventory control. Forklift certification. The South Yard Material Handler will need to be able to satisfactorily perform all functions of this position within 45 days of starting this position.

Decision Making

This job requires the employee to make decisions that affect the quality of the products they are manipulating. These are decisions that affect the employee’s own work quality and output. The employee must understand the processes and functions of the equipment to determine when changes need to be made in the routine tasks due to abnormal conditions. These abnormal conditions may be climatic, equipment or piece related. Able to use initiative in solving major problems within everyday activities. Operator has as good knowledge of the typical products that are moved. Must have a good understanding of their own abilities and knowledge to determine when to seek help making decisions. South Yard Material Handler prioritizes responses to radio calls and workload to avoid lost time to all departments. Utilizes product mix in location assuring proper rotation of all stored materials.  Uses impact and other methods for improvements.  Reviews space allocations and material flow to maximize utilization of space available.  Able to apply creativity to solving the problems encountered within the scope of his/her activity.  Dumps scrap by grade for maximum dollar return.  Must have the ability to understand the logic and importance of controlled movement of materials.

Physical Effort

Without the help of the forklift, the Material Handler may have to lift, push and carry material but this represents less than 5% of the shift. Stooping, bending and squatting are required for most physical lifting, pushing and pulling. The Material Handler may be required to push, pull or lift up to 50lbs., but most of the physical lifting and moving is completed with the use of the forklift. The employee must be able to move about the warehouse or yard area with and without the forklift (close to 10% of the movements on the shift needs to be done without the use of the forklift). The rest of the shift is spent working in a sitting position from inside of a forklift, side loader, shag truck or straddle truck.
