A Brief Summary of This Position:

The primary role of the Utility Person is to work closely with the Production Lead and Supervisor, peers, and other departments to contribute to Valmont’s overall success.  The Utility Person must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results. Working closely with your Shift LeadPerson and peers, you will be responsible for driving the Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost metrics in the Large Pole Shop.  Effective communication, leadership, teamwork and motivation with all shop employees while adhering to Valmont’s standards, policies, and procedures are critical for this role. 

Essential Functions:

  • Work closely with your Production Lead, peers, and other Departments to contribute to Valmont’s overall success
  • Ensure pre-inspections of all equipment are completed for safe operation throughout the shift.
  • Monitor and coach employees on shift to ensure all safety policies and procedures are followed and adhered to
  • Operate crane in a safe and effective manner to keep product flowing efficiently through the shop.
  • Implement and assign work schedules to maximize the utilization of manpower, machines, and equipment
  • Set daily direction and clearly communicate expected production standards for your specific department.  Understand and follow up on daily performance. 
  • Work with the  Team on Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to understand performance and quality deficiencies.
  • Promote a continuous improvement climate that encourages suggestions from the team
  • Help assess and manage the team’s bench strength.
  • Ensure inspection checks and quality assurance occurs to produce high quality products
  • Support the team and fill in however and wherever necessary to help drive the success of the Department
  • Provide feedback and input to Leadperson and/or Supervisor about team performance

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • The ability to pass a forklift driver’s test
  • Currently Welder B status or higher
  • Communicate and interact with coworkers, at all levels, in a positive manner
  • Strong experience and working ability in operating an overhead crane and associated equipment
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to support divisional business objectives
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to accomplish tasks and reach goals through the work of the team
  • The ability to learn/understand all Large Pole functions in your specific area within one year
  • The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
  • Knowledge of and ability to use common shop mathematics, in feet, inches, degrees, and fractions, in reading complex prints, and standard specifications
  • The ability to solve problems and make an informed decision based on the situation

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree with 5+ years of relevant work experience, or 7+ years relevant experience is preferred
  • A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Outlook
  • A strong working knowledge of IFS
  • Demonstrated experience in Leadership
  • Practical hands on experience in Lean Manufacturing
  • Effectively interpret and present information both one-on-one and in front of a group
