A Brief Summary of This Position:

The IT Analytical Engineer is part of the IT Data and Analytics team.  This group is responsible for capturing data from numerous disparate sources of all types, modeling it and transforming it into simple information models, and working with all the various business partners within the organization to deliver actionable insights.

This role will develop technical solutions and strategies for business intelligence needs; Help to build and support Valmont’s self-service analytics platform; Understand and work with business partners to fulfill their data and information needs; Gather requirements from assigned business teams, and work with other Engineers to build out the data models; Have a deep understanding of BI tools and determine how they can be implemented to automate processes for end users within the business.

Essential Functions:

  • This role will report to the IT Manager Analytics and have no direct or indirect reports.

  • Build and support Self-Service solutions for BI Analysts, Stakeholders, and other Business Partners.

  • In conjunction with Data Engineers, BI Analysts, Data Scientists, Data owners and Department managers, develop and model Information Marts and semantic layers for end users.

  • Enable the deployment of Business Intelligence, Visualization, and Data Science projects as part of the Valmont Data & Analytics Center of Excellence.

  • Contribute to end-to-end data pipelines using DataBricks, Azure services, and Azure Data Factory (ADF) to efficiently process large volumes of structured and unstructured data.

  • Help define routines and standards for end users to facilitate best-practice use of analytical and visualization tools.

  • Identify research questions, problem solve using analytical tools, and communicate the results to various stakeholders.

  • Ensure enterprise data warehouse solutions created under his/her responsibility adhere to departmental standards, appropriate controls and audit trails exist, and are thoroughly tested prior to installation in production environment.

  • Provide on-going enterprise data lakehouse technical support and participate in training.

  • Continuously monitor industry trends, standards and technologies.  Research, recommend and apply new technologies as they emerge.

  • Contribute to the optimization of data processing and storage strategies to ensure scalability, reliability, and performance of analytics solutions.

  • Apply Agile, Waterfall or other similar Application lifecycle methodology to develop the solutions.



Required Qualifications of Every Candidate:

  • Preferred Bachelor’s degree with 3+ years of relevant experience or Associate’s degree with 5+ years of relevant experience or 9+ years of relevant experience.

  • Experience with DataBricks, Azure services (such as Azure Data Lake Storage, Azure SQL Database, Azure Synapse Analytics), and Azure Data Factory (ADF).

  • Proficiency in SQL, data manipulation, analysis, and visualization.

  • Some experience with Python and Machine Learning concepts.

  • Basic understanding of data warehousing concepts, dimensional modeling, and ETL processes.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Effective communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.

  • Ability and desire to learn the manufacturing and business process supported by IT.

  • Ability to provide examples of work.

  • Highly self-motivated and directed individual.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to translate and communicate technical messaging to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to conduct research into data management issues, practices, and products as required.

  • Strong technical documentation skills.

  • Keen attention to detail.

  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:



  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business Analytics, Computer Science or MIS.



  • Experience working in an Agile environment.



  • Certifications in relevant technologies (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate).



  • Hands-on Experience with Python or R.



  • Experience with Machine Learning models (regression, classification, and applied statistics/probability).



  • Knowledge of Cloud Database Services: Microsoft Azure SQL Database, Databricks, & Synapse, Snowflake, SAP Hana Cloud.



  • Knowledge of Data Warehouse automation tools and ETL processes.



  • Project management and problem solving skillsets.



  • Strong history of delivering value added solutions to business users.
