A Brief Summary of This Position

The Laser Technician is a vital position with the Fabrication department.  The Laser Technician will be the liaison between production, scheduling and purchasing/buying departments to ensure the proper product needs are matched with business needs.  The Laser Technician will also provide direction, set up and trouble shooting and problem solving with the laser.  The incumbent will work with the Laser Operators to provide instructions on laser operation as well as guidance on when and how to update laser performance to maximize results.  The Laser Technician will work with Irrigation Maintenance and Trumpf Service to schedule annual PM’s. The Laser Technician will work with International Laser Technicians to ensure laser cutting “best practices” are developed and followed.

Essential Functions

  • Create laser tasks/jobs based on production schedules and ensure proper materials and quantity of materials are available.
  • Ensure work orders are written and submitted to substantiate labor and materials.
  • Review CAD drawings submitted by “other sources” (Product Engineering, International Manufacturing Engineering, Machine Builders, Structures, Irrigation Maintenance, etc.) are drawn properly to enable them to be imported into the laser programming software.
  • Coordinate with Production Control to add parts to nests for better material utilization.
  • Revise jobs/nests as necessary as well as adjust the quantities of nested parts to completely fill nested sheets/plates.
  • Assign material types and part orientation to execute translation.
  • Verify unfolded blank sizes in laser programming software match part print and revise K factor if match isn’t accurate.
  • Coordinate with Laser Operator to ensure accuracy and quality end product is created and standard work procedures are being followed.  Trouble shoot and guide Laser Operator in any adjustments needed.
  • Collaborate with Engineering on potential design revisions for efficient cutting.
  • Reconcile discrepancies (materials do not match in Creo model; wrong K factor used, part contains many short elements etc.).
  • Review weekly quality inspections, laser control charts and TPM completion to ensure laser accuracy.
  • Stay abreast on equipment updates, technology, skills and best practices.
  • Understanding of The Valmont Way theory of Lean Manufacturing principles, including Lean Daily Management.  Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, Valmont Lean staff, and Production to improve process and work flow through the laser area.
  • Ensure sufficient quantities of laser consumables are available.  If not, source and order as necessary.  Source and order consumables necessary for annual PM visits and ensure their availability when needed.
  • Function as a “backup” for International Laser Technicians as well as Laser Operators.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • High School diploma and 2+ years of relevant work/educational experience.
  • Experience using CAD and/or Solidworks programming software.
  • Proficient in mathematics.
  • Accurately read and use a tape measure, compass, micrometer, mag level, protractor, versa gauge, and caliper.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Software.
  • The ability to communicate and interact with coworkers in a professional manner.
  • Ability to travel approximately 5%.
  • Ability to wear all required PPE for the production facility, as well as be exposed to outdoor weather and indoor facility conditions including cold, heat, dirt, noise and fumes.

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • Associates degree in CAD or CNC programing.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience Operating an Ipad.
  • Demonstrate excellent safety practices and behaviors which conform to all Valmont safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform various other duties requested by the supervisor to ensure customer requests are met.

Working Environment and Physical Efforts

Some of the working conditions for this position are in a manufacturing shop environment with exposure to dirt, grease, fumes, cold, heat, noise, dust. The Laser Technician will work in both the office and shop environment.   Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  5% travel is required for this position.  Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
