A Brief Summary of This Position:


This Manager level position is responsible for structural analysis and design and drafting of products to be quoted and fabricated by the Valmont Utility Division, primarily those involved in the steel group lattice transmission and substation structures.  Included in this is the full design responsibility for processing specific orders (including those projects requiring PE stamping) and major developmental projects, general design engineering support for drafting and sales in North America, and providing guidance and training for Associate, Design, Project Engineers, and Senior Professional Engineers. In addition, the position provides technical leadership for developing the steel lattice markets through participation in professional organizations, code committees, and technical presentations.


Essential Functions:



•         This position reports to the Vice President of Engineering, Global Utility and has no direct or indirect reports


•         This role requires up to (20%) travel (internationally/domestically), including overnight stays


•         Works in conjunction with Sales, Product Management, and the International Engineering group to best achieve goals and objectives in coordination with overall Utility segment’s goals and objectives


•         Provides training, direction, and motivation for peers and subordinates


•         Keeps the Vice President of Engineering, Global Utility and other senior staff members informed of all pertinent items and issues


•         Establishes criteria and analysis methods used in the design and drafting of steel lattice structures and establishes the methods used to assure the structural capability of these products in coordination with the larger Utility engineering group


•         Participates in professional societies and industry technical activities.  Keeps self and others informed about competition, industry standards, new innovations, and technological advances


•         Maintains good relationships with customers, agents, suppliers, and consulting engineering firms


•         Emphasizes responsiveness to customer needs while maintaining company goals


•         Evaluates customers and their projects in terms of balancing meeting their needs and the company’s performance goals and objectives


•         Interprets customer specifications, recommends alternative approaches where appropriate, and negotiates their acceptance


•         Evaluates field problem reports and initiates corrective action to prevent problem recurrence


•         Works with manufacturing and quality assurance to establish and maintain acceptable tolerances and standards of workmanship


•         Recommends the utilization or rejection of damaged or defective material


•         Promotes and maintains a productive working relationship both within the engineering department and with other departments of the Company


•         Participates in the Utility Engineering efforts to standardize design and material on a divisional basis and to maintain a common engineering technique


Other Important Details about the Role:


Under the general direction of the VP Engineering, the incumbent applies intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields.  This person makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods, and represents the organization at conferences and industry committees. The position requires the use of advanced techniques and the modification and extension of theories, precepts, and practices of the incumbent's own field and related sciences and disciplines.  The knowledge and expertise required for this level of work usually results from progressive experience, including work comparable to that of a Senior Professional Engineer.


The work carried out under the management of this position is structural design engineering and drafting relating to fabricated steel structures used for the support of electric power transmission and distribution lines incorporating all products of the Utility Division.  The position is responsible for ensuring the design integrity of all lattice structures manufactured by the Utility Division for North America in close coordination with the Vice President Engineering, Global Utility and the Global Utility Director of International Engineering.  This includes:



•       Application and coordination of research, development, and testing of these products;


•       Development of design and application criteria, analysis and design methods, computer programs, etc.;


•       Development of production drawings, drafting systems, and computerization of the drafting process;


•       Application engineering and technical assistance to Sales including considerable customer contact; interpretation of customer specifications and requirements in combination with applicable national, technical society, and Valmont codes and specifications;


•       Analysis of and solutions to problems with structures in the field;


•       Coordination with Manufacturing to minimize production costs and to determine the usability of rejected products;


•       Maintenance and security of design information and test data files.


The incumbent must possess a high level of technical competence in structural engineering; a complete understanding of the end use of the product and the nature of the design loads to which the product will be subjected; knowledge of fabrication and welding procedures, manufacturing processes used in the product, and quality assurance requirements and methods.


The activities of this position are intertwined with the functions of many different people of diverse backgrounds.  The incumbent must possess good communication skills in order to:



•          Illustrate his ideas in general terms to people from non-technical disciplines;


•          Define concepts in precise engineering terms to technical people.


This position encounters a wide variety of challenges ranging from engineering problem solving to schedule and resource management to interpersonal relationship differences.


The management and guidance received by the incumbent relates largely to overall objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters.  The incumbent consults with the Vice President Engineering, Global Utility concerning unusual problems and developments, shifting company priorities and policies, overall project volume coordination, and providing consistent process control across the segment’s design groups.


Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):



•                     Bachelor’s Degree with 7+ years relevant experience


•                     Professional Engineering registration (qualified through examination)


•                     Strong structural or civil engineering background with 8 years of experience in the design of lattice steel structures


•                     Bachelor Degree in Engineering, Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with structural experience


•                     Skills in working with professional people including strong leadership qualities


•                     Ability to manage multiple tasks within the Engineering organization and provide direction to individual engineers and drafters, territorial and strategic teams, and other developmental teams


•                     Demonstrated solid understanding of the end use of the product, its function, and the nature of the design elements


•                     Demonstrated solid understanding of the fabrication, welding procedures and processes, and quality assurance requirements used by Valmont for these products


•                     Good communication skills in both technical and non-technical application


•                  Fluent in English oral and written communication


Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:



•                     Ability to obtain Passport and Travel Visas as required


•                     License to drive domestically and internationally


•                     Travel up to 30%, domestically and up to 10% internationally


•                     Computer Software Proficiency: TOWER, IMPAX, PLS-POLE, PLS-CADD, Microsoft Suite, Evault, NitroPro or PDF Pro, JIRA, Workday, ADP and other Design and Drafting software


Working Environment and Physical Efforts:



•         This role is frequently performed in a temperature controlled office environment or suitable indoor environment if outside of the office and requires ability to sit for extended periods of time or walking and/or standing.  The incumbent will be required to participate in regular and ad hoc meetings.  During certain times of the month, the environment tends to be more fast-paced and demanding.



•         Occasionally, the work may involve visiting manufacturing facilities or customer offices or sites and the incumbent may be exposed to an outdoor environment which may be warm, cold, windy, rainy/wet, etc. Any work in areas outside of an office may require appropriate clothing suitable for inclement weather as well as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).  It is the responsibility of the incumbent to understand the safety requirements of all areas entered into in the course of work and to wear the appropriate PPE which may include hard hat, safety glasses, ear/hearing protection, steel-toed boots, long sleeves and/or long pants. 



•         The incumbent is most likely infrequently exposed to areas where hazardous chemicals are in use, but in the event this occurs, the incumbent should follow up with site management to ensure safe passage in and around such hazardous areas. 



•         Lifting requirements are up to 40 pounds occasionally (weight of suitcase and/or marketing displays and materials).  Frequent to constant use of computer and/or iPhone is required. 



•         The incumbent may also be required to drive a personal or rental vehicle throughout the course of employment.
