A Brief Summary of This Position:

The Materials Planner is responsible for planning and reviewing site demand activities, focusing on accuracy and system data integrity with the goal of supporting site build schedule requirements. The employee participates in tactical business decisions and operates as the liaison between central purchasing and site operations. The Materials Planner is accountable for accurate material demand in the ERP system and timely updates as needed. The incumbent will work closely with the central purchasing team and site operations team.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for reviewing purchase requisitions and verifying the accuracy of item, quantity and date needed

  • Responsible for assigning available on hand material to satisfy demand recognized by the purchase requisition

  • Responsible for purchasing items from other Valmont facilities to satisfy demand recognized by the purchase requisition

  • Responsible for processing purchase requisitions for Senior Category Buyer if new material purchase is required

  • Responsible for monitoring estimated delivery of material and communicating to stakeholders at site

  • Responsible for gathering all needed information when there is a material reject and communicating with central purchasing

  • Responsible for maintaining a professional working relationship with internal customers and stakeholders

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of production processes and how to properly respond to the stated requirements

  • Process Engineering Change Notices for items purchased affecting new or existing materials and communicate with central purchasing

  • Assist central buyer and accounts payable in timely credit/debit reconciliation

  • Active participation in inventory control at the site. Works with shop personnel, inventory control specialist and others to maintain accurate inventory.

  • Participates in lean initiative events

  • Reviews purchasing standard work procedures for improvements to increase customer satisfaction and/or reduce costs

  • Act as a backup for other Material Planners

  • This position reports into the site purchasing leader

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • 4+ years of experience with a focus on understanding MRP systems

  • 2+ years of experience in a production/manufacturing environment or a material role

  • ISM (CPSM), APICS (C.P.I.M.) Certified Purchasing Manager or Certified Professional in Inventory Management Certification or equivalent

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment, building relationships with all levels of employees

  • Ability to organize and manage multiple simultaneous priorities and meet aggressive deadlines

  • Attention to detail and accuracy while working in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines

  • Judgment and decision-making skills while comparing relative cost and benefit potential

  • A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Outlook

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in operations, operations planning, purchasing, master scheduling, production planning, inventory control or production control within an MRP/ERP environment

  • Associate degree in supply chain

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an office setting.  The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings.  Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer.  The employee is occasionally required to move about the office.  Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.  The position does require the incumbent to have a valid US driver’s license and be able to travel by plane as required by the job.
