A Brief Summary of This Position:

The primary role of the Lead is to work closely with the Production Supervisor, peers, and other departments to contribute to Valmont’s overall success. This position reports directly to the Production Supervisor and is responsible for driving the Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost metrics in the Shop. Effective communication, leadership, teamwork and motivation with all shop employees while adhering to Valmont’s standards, policies, and procedures are critical for this role. 

Shift: 2nd (Evenings)

Monday-Friday 3pm-11pm

Starting Hourly Pay Rate:

$26.72 (step 1) + $1.00 for shift differential + $.75 Lead allowances

Opportunity for step pay increases at 90 days, 1 year & 2 years

Essential Functions:

  • Communicate effectively with supervisor and shift regarding workload, problems or issues on the shift, safety items, maintenance issues, goals and progress with respect to the goals, results of prior day, etc.

  • Be responsible for making sure all employees maintain proper PPE on the shop floor

  • Be knowledgeable of shop goals and keep them posted for your department; keep your team on track with these goals

  • Enforce company policies and procedures

  • Use GMAW and FCAW process to tack weld various small components to round or square shafts to make a pole assembly for the welder to weld. The pole assembly consists of a square or round shaft, base plate, hand hole, arm mounting simplex, tenon top, and/or other small parts.

  • Manually position shaft on conveyor line to position shaft for assembly using jib crane for lifting various components, such as base plate and arm mounting simplex, into position for assembly

  • Read and interpret drawings to determine parts needed to assemble pole assembly. Locate and gather parts needed for assembly from parts staging area, staged by the stores personnel

  • Use plasma torch and oxy-fuel torch to cut steel

  • Uses jigs made at Valmont for cutting holes in shafts for inserting hand hole rims, arm mounting simplex’s, couplings, and other small parts

  • Use measuring tape, levels, squares, and angle finders to measure distances and angles. Adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides feet, inches, fractions, and decimals. Uses table to convert fractions to decimals, and decimals to fractions.

  • Work in confined areas at various locations of assembly lines as necessary to accurately measure and assemble components described above. Move under, around, and over poles as necessary, to get into proper position to assemble pole assembly.

  • Use motorized grinders, motorized buffers, stone grinders, and drills to help assemble

  • Use overhead cranes, straddle truck, and fork truck to move product in and out of the shop

  • Update load and WIP reports to maintain accurate records and load list. Ensure the product comes into the shop in the correct order as required.

  • Operational knowledge of the shop saw, in order to cover for vacancies or absences

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Must be able to read and write English clearly

  • Strong applied manufacturing mathematical skills

  • Must pass GMAW/FCAW weld test and maintain certification

  • The ability to work assigned schedule to include overtime and weekends when required for business needs

  • Experience with safely operating a forklift in a professional environment

  • Excellent communication, organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills

  • A strong working knowledge of precision measurement with a tape measure

  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Excel and Word

  • Working knowledge of Valmont’s Manufacturing process

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • 2 years of supervisory or management experience in a manufacturing specific role

  • 2 years previous experience working in an assembly environment

  • 2 years previous experience working in a manufacturing or fabrication environment

  • 2 years previous experience operating hand and/or power tools

  • The ability to accurately and honestly check one’s own work for quality assurance

  • Trained in Lean Manufacturing processes

  • Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

The job is performed in an indoor shop and office environment. The temperature range can be from 100+ degrees in the summer to about 40 degrees in the winter. Most operations may expose employee to some type of disagreeable working conditions (wind, cold, heat, dust, dirt, fumes, noise, vibration, water, and/or oil). Working conditions may vary with specific work assignments. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The job requires safety glasses, hearing protection, and metatarsal safety shoes be worn at all times. The employee may have to spend the entire work shift on their feet within the shop environment.

The incumbent may be regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. The environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Hazards:

Exposure to additional heat during fitting/welding process above ambient temperature and direct exposure to weld fumes. Exposure to electrical hazards, grease, loud noises, and outside elements occur continually or regularly. This job requires handling metal objects, some of which have sharp edges. Extreme care and awareness should be taken for all production jobs. Below are some common hazards that exist for this particular position. Set up and run of equipment provides the potential for injury through slips, falls, strains, pinch points, tripping hazards, shot blasting equipment, high pressure air nozzles, material handling equipment. There will also be frequent exposure to outside elements for short periods of time. Being outside will also expose them to material handling equipment such as forklifts, straddle trucks, and shag trucks.
