A Brief Summary of This Position:

The primary role of the Production Lead is to work closely with the Operations Manager and cover when the Operations Manager is not on site.  The Production Lead 13 advises peers, and works other departments to contribute to Valmont’s overall success. The Production Lead must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results. This position reports directly to the Operations Manager  and is responsible for driving the Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost metrics in the Shop.  Effective communication, leadership, teamwork and motivation with all employees while adhering to Valmont’s standards, policies, and procedures are critical for this role. 

Essential Functions:

  • Recommends employment action to Operations Manager based on work performance or work behaviors
  • Attends production employee performance review meetings with Operations Manager as needed
  • Monitor and coach employees on shift to ensure all safety policies, procedures, and company rules are followed and adhered to
  • Responsible for making sure that all employees are using/wearing all required PPE for their specific duties
  • Responsible for reporting all injuries and near misses to Manufacturing Manager and Safety as soon as possible
  • Responsible for housekeeping and the incorporation of these functions in the day to day processes
  • Monitor and coach team to ensure operators follow quality standards and avoid passing on poor quality
  • Ensure inspection checks and quality assurance occur on product and processes to ensure high quality products are delivered to the customer per the specifications
  • Set daily direction and clearly communicate expected production standards for the shift; understand and follow up on daily performance
  • Develop a strong personal understanding of all processes and equipment within the assigned department
  • Train, coach, and develop the team to ensure proper operation of assigned work and equipment
  • Help assess and manage the team’s bench strength and cross training needs
  • Lead the Team on Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to understand losses; take action to prevent future breakdowns and incidents
  • Understand and drive cost reduction efforts within department and site
  • Promote a continuous improvement climate that encourages suggestions and involvement from the team
  • Administer and support company policies and procedures in a fair and consistent manner
  • Support the team and fill in however and wherever necessary to help drive the success of the department
  • Monitor equipment condition and plan downtime for repairs and preventative maintenance

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Four years of leadership experience (ideally in an industrial and/or manufacturing setting).
  • The ability to pass a forklift driver’s test
  • Ability to read and interpret blue prints
  • Working knowledge of Valmont’s manufacturing process
  • A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Outlook
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to support divisional business objectives
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to accomplish tasks and reach goals through the work of the team
  • The ability to gain basic understanding of department functions within six months
  • The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
  • Knowledge of and ability to use common shop mathematics (in feet, inches, fractions, and degrees) in reading complex prints and specifications
  • The ability to solve problems and make an informed decision based on the situation
  • Communicate and interact with team members, at all levels, in a positive manner
  • Effectively interpret and present information both one-on-one and in front of a group

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree with 5+ years of relevant work experience, or 7+ years relevant experience is preferred
  • More than four years experience in a leadership role in a fast paced manufacturing environment
  • A strong working knowledge of IFS
  • Demonstrated experience in a Leadership role is preferred
  • Practical hands on experience in Lean Manufacturing

Educational Background

Must be able to clearly understand, follow, and communicate written and verbal instructions.  Needs to be proficient in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, performs decimal conversions, and the use of a tape measure.  Must be proficient in the reading of specifications, bills of material, and blue prints.  Must be able to perform the computer functions / transactions required by the department.

Physical Effort

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms to push and pull product.  The employee regularly is required to walk, talk, climb stairs, sit, and hear.  The employee is occasionally required climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or bend.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  100% of working time will be spent on a production floor.
