A Brief Summary of This Position

The Production Lead is a highly driven individual that will be responsible for safety; leading 5S, conducting job interviews, and will be required to successfully complete Valmont Leadership Essentials training. This individual will be required to have familiarity of all workstations and be able to lead Toolbox Talks and team meetings. The Production Lead needs to have knowledge of product quality, exercising cost control, producing parts and assemblies to schedule, motivating shop employees to attain quantity and quality standards and administering company and division policies. This position leads the production employees and maintains the log of operations.

Job Summary

The Production Lead is responsible for an assigned production area including the human and capital assets of the department.

Activities include:

  • This position is responsible for assembling the current day’s production.
  • Leads 5S and Gemba board discussions; train people in processes, polices and safety procedures; demonstrates the willingness to cross-train in other areas.
  • Must be able to plan the weekly workload and be able to identify and report engineering issues.
  • Be able to provide supervisor coverage in the absence of the Supervisor and be responsible for inventory management.
  • Demonstrates strong verbal communication - speaks with clarity, precision and purpose in small and large groups.
  • Must be able to deliver results - achieves goals in a timely manner while providing excellent customer service.
  • Responsible for training new employees in the Assembly department.
  • In addition, all Bartow personnel receive cross training and are expected to work in any part of the plant as required by management.
  • This individual works under the direction of the Supervisor, and reports directly to the site Operations Manager.

Essential Functions

  • This individual is responsible for all aspects of pole assembly.
  • Must be able to demonstrate strong decision making - makes decisions and takes responsibility for them.

  • Responsible for laying out the daily workload for employees.
  • This individual must review all assembled pieces.
  • Notify Lead QA of readiness for inspection and make any indicated changes or corrections.
  • Under the direction of Supervisor, this individual will assist in training all new personnel to the Assembly department.

In addition, all employees are expected to assist other crews with other departmental work and cleaning. Cross-training results in a flexible and active workforce and offers employees the opportunity to see and develop a wide variety of skills.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • Education/Training – Literacy and use of measuring devices required.
  • Be able to demonstrate competency in computer literacy.
  • Must be able to complete VLE training course and be able to train future Leads.
  • Be able to speak on department metrics in daily Operations meetings (SQDC).
  • Must be willing to be developed and placed in stretch assignments.
  • Experience/Knowledge – None – entry level. Welding experience is preferred.
  • Competencies – Ability to read tape measure, ability to learn on the job in a fast-paced environment, and flexibility are required.

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Three years of experience in a supervisory position.
  • Previous supervisory experience in a manufacturing or logistic operations environment.
  • Practical hands-on experience in Lean Manufacturing.
  • Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results.

Working Environment and Physical Efforts

Work performed in an industrial shop setting. The incumbent is regularly required to stand for extended periods of time. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. There are no travel requirements for this position. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the shop. The employee is frequently required to move about the shop and site. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards when performing manual tasks such as welding or handling various materials. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds in working with materials and equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Working conditions may include abnormal temperatures including heat, cold, rain, snow and ice. Employee may also be exposed to jarring and bouncing, high noise areas, and other job-related hazards. Employees are required to wear all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for the position.
