A Brief Summary of This Position:

The Quality Assurance (QA) Tech provides the needed quality-related assistance and expertise within the assigned area of responsibility to assure the engineering specifications, process requirements, and quality objectives for material, parts and products are consistently met at a minimum cost to the company. This position supports company improvement initiatives such as Lean methodology, RCA’s (root cause analysis), SCOT (Ship Complete on Time), and interaction with related work teams. The incumbent monitors the quality of raw materials, parts, components and assemblies to established specifications and standards. The QA Tech performs visual and dimensional inspections and tests on material and components as they are received from the suppliers and in the completed state. The compliance of the operators and supervisors are audited to established quality policies and procedures. The QA Tech works with Tool and Die in the design and qualification of inspection gauges unique to Valmont products. The QA Tech will perform audits the compliance of operators and supervisors to established Quality policies and procedures.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for testing and evaluation of new products to ensure conformance to company and customer specifications
  • Assure that corrective and preventative actions are implemented when non-conformities are found
  • Identify, investigate, and communicate process non-compliances and product nonconformities
  • Perform incoming and first article inspections, corrosion tests when applicable
  • Initiate process control techniques
  • Collect and compile process control and capability data, communicating the data to the relevant personnel
  • Prepare and deliver training to production operators on measurement, use of gauging, inspection procedures as well as Valmont procedures
  • Provide written communication and transactions in programs within Microsoft Office Suite
  • Design check fixtures
  • Order gauging as needed
  • Develop work instructions, process aids, and forms
  • This position reports into the Quality Assurance Manager and has no direct reports

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • High School diploma and 5+ years of work/educational experience or Associates degree in Quality, Business or related field and 2+ years of work/educational experience
  • Certified Quality Inspector (CQI accreditation from the American Society for Quality (ASQ-CQI) or Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) accreditation from AWS (American Welding Society)
  • Proven ability to properly use a measuring machine, an optical comparator, a salt fog tester and standard measuring equipment
  • A high awareness for safety at all times
  • A valid U.S. driver’s license
  • The ability to safely lift up to 20 pounds frequently throughout the shift
  • A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Passion and integrity with the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) from ASQ, or Quality Manager Certification (CMQ/OE)
  • Strong working knowledge in quality assurance disciplines including the use of dimensional inspection and gauging equipment
  • A level of technical competence to enable him/her to intelligently communicate on a wide range of technically-oriented subjects
  • An Associate’s Degree in Quality, Business or related field
  • NDT (non-destructive testing) experience
  • Engineering background (education or experience)
  • Experience with various Quality Management Systems such as Document control and Specification Deviations
  • Experience operating QAD Enterprise Application (formerly QAD MFG/PRO) software in a professional environment
  • Experience interpreting engineering specifications such as ASTM
  • A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Access

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in a manufacturing plant environment and the incumbent needs to be able to move about the office, shipping area and all areas of the plant which are producing product line for the company. There is a relatively constant exposure to somewhat disagreeable work conditions such as dust, dirt, heat, fumes, and cold as well as noise levels above 80 decibels. Work conditions vary throughout the week depending on the area of the plant the QA Tech is assigned to work in. There will be visits to both indoor and outdoor locations during all seasons of the year. When necessary, the Quality Assurance Technician must be willing and able to travel to supplier’s factories and other Valmont site when needed for business needs (up to 5%, domestic only).  There is no international travel required for this position. The work environment can be fast-paced and demanding at times.

Many of the tasks are physical and the Quality Assurance Technician has to be able to lift up to 50 lbs. although the most frequent amount of weight lifted is 20 lbs. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, feel, as well as balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
