A Brief Summary of This Position

This is an individual contributor position responsible for operating the Sub Arc Seam Welder to weld the seams of steel shafts.  The Sub Arc Seam Welder is responsible for loading shafts into the welding machine with the use of a conveyor or an overhead crane and operating the seam weld positioning tuners. The Sub Arc Seam Welder must also position the piece through the weld head(s) as the weld is deposited to make a pole.  The Sub Arc Seam Welder is also responsible for adjusting carriage speeds, side roll pressures, amperage and flux flow.  The incumbent also assists with or operates an overhead crane or forklift in material or supply movement.  The incumbent monitors the quality of incoming steel and determines when material is substandard, as well as reports damage to the product or machinery to the Utility Person or Lead Person.  The person in this position also may be assigned to other work areas in production when the the machine is not running. 

Essential Functions

  • Load steel shafts into Sub Arc Seam Welder.
  • Machine weld the entire seem of steel shaft using the Sub Arc Seam Welder to make a steel pole.
  • Monitor the quality of incoming steel shafts and determine when material is substandard.
  • Operate a straightener to straighten the shafts after welding.
  • Utilize precision measuring instruments to ensure incoming material and to verify that finished product meets specifications.

Important Details about the Role

  • Accurately read a tape measure.
  • Pass an American Welding Society (AWS) welder operator qualification test for submerged arc welding (SAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW).
  • Setup, operate, and perform general maintenance of equipment without difficulty.
  • Make mathematical calculations in preparing product or setting up the machinery.
  • Read and decipher blueprints and flat sheets without assistance and use them to properly weld scheduled work.
  • This position reports into Production Supervisor.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

  • No degree required.
  • Minimum of 3+ years relevant experience.
  • The ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with most frequent lift up to 20 pounds.
  • The ability to read blueprints.
  • Ability to use tape measure.
  • Ability to be Valmont trained and certified in operation of forklift.
  • Must have a high awareness for safety at all times.

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • One year of previous experience in a professional welding position.
  • Experience with PLC controlled machinery.
  • The ability to pay attention to detail and follow work instructions.
  • The ability to communicate and interact with coworkers in a positive manner.
  • Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results.
  • AWS certified welder operator qualification for both SAW and GMAW processes.

Educational Background

  • Able to clearly communicate written and verbal instructions.
  • Proficiency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, fraction to decimal conversions, and the use of micrometers, protractors, and tape measures.
  • Ability to read specifications, bill of material, and simple and complex blueprints.

Job Training Skill Development

Must be able to satisfactorily perform all functions of this position within 90 days of starting this position.  Must pass Valmont forklift certification for all forklifts used in the position.

Decision Making

The decisions the person in this position makes affects inventory accuracy and availability of material for the production and shipping areas.  The incumbent is responsible for prioritizing the work load to avoid lost time to all departments.  Utilizes product mix in location assuring proper rotation of stored materials.  Reviews space allocations and material flow to maximize utilization of space available.  Able to apply creativity to solve the problems encountered within the scope of their activity.  Examples would be to receive material, issue material, or resolve inventory discrepancies and implement the appropriate action to correct them.

Physical Effort

Operates equipment 75% of the time.  Lifts, pushes, and carries material <50 lbs., 25% of the time.  Standing, stooping, bending, sitting and squatting 100% of the shift.

Working Conditions

  • Constant outdoor working conditions and abnormal temperatures which include heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, etc.
  • Works around material stacked overhead height.
  • Works around material stored on pallets on the ground.
  • Constant jarring and bouncing.
  • Standing and/or working in water.
  • Subject to high levels of temperature due to usage of a forge to preheat parts.
  • High noise level and interior temperature conditions while operating mobile equipment.
  • Required to wear all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for the position.
