A Brief Summary of This Position:

The primary role of the Lead is to work closely with the Production Supervisor, peers, and other departments to contribute to Valmont’s overall success. The Lead must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results. This position reports directly to the Production Supervisor and is responsible for driving the Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost metrics in the Shop.  Effective communication, leadership, teamwork and motivation with all shop employees while adhering to Valmont’s standards, policies, and procedures are critical for this role. 

Shift: 2nd (Evenings)

Monday-Friday 3pm-11pm

Starting Hourly Pay Rate: $26.72 + $.75 Lead pay + $1.00 for shift differential

Opportunity for step pay increases at 90 days, 1 year & 2 years

Essential Functions:

  • Work closely with your Production Supervisor, peers, and other Departments to contribute to Valmont’s overall success

  • Monitor and coach employees on shift to ensure all safety policies and procedures are followed and adhered to

  • Implement and assign work schedules and vacations to maximize the utilization of manpower, machines, and equipment

  • Set daily directives and clearly communicate expected production standards for the shift and follow up on daily performance

  • Ensure inspection checks, reject and repair work and quality assurance occurs to produce high quality products

  • Lead the Team on Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to understand losses and take action to prevent future breakdowns and incidents

  • Promote a continuous improvement climate that encourages suggestions from the team

  • Train, coach, and develop the team to ensure proper operation of assigned work and equipment

  • Help assess and manage the team’s bench strength

  • Administer and support company policies and procedures in a fair and consistent manner

  • Ability to accept and respond accordingly to coaching and feedback for individual/team performance needs

  • Support the team and fill in however and wherever necessary to help drive the success of the Department to include the following

  • Tube line equipment: (Buff line, Saw, Straightener, Burnisher, Shear, Former, Big Wheel) set up, operation, troubleshooting of all equipment within the department

  • Check set-up and first piece parts

  • Weld and cleaning of welds

  • Ability to work and coordinate with the Maintenance team with any/all maintenance needs

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Must obtain valid Valmont forklift Operator License for all forklifts used in the position

  • Ability to read and write English

  • A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Outlook

  • The ability to work assigned schedule to include overtime and weekends when required for business needs

  • Experience with safely operating a forklift in a professional environment

  • The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals

  • Knowledge of and ability to use common shop mathematics, in feet, inches, degrees, and fractions, in reading simple and complex prints, bills of material, and standard specifications

  • The ability to solve problems and make an informed decision based on the situation

  • Communicate and interact with coworkers, at all levels, in a positive manner

  • Effectively interpret and present information both one-on-one and in front of a group

  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to support divisional business objectives

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated ability to recognize when weld quality falls below acceptable levels and take corrective action to ensure repairs are made. 

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree with 5+ years of relevant work experience, or 8+ years relevant experience is preferred

  • 2 years of supervisory or management experience in a manufacturing specific role

  • 2 years previous experience working in a manufacturing or fabrication environment

  • Practical hands on experience in Lean Manufacturing

  • Demonstrated ability to accomplish tasks and reach goals through the work of the team

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

The job is performed in an indoor shop and office environment. The temperature range can be from 100+ degrees in the summer to about 40 degrees in the winter. Most operations may expose employee to some type of disagreeable working conditions (wind, cold, heat, dust, dirt, fumes, noise, vibration, water, and/or oil). Working conditions may vary with specific work assignments. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Employee is required to walk, talk, climb stairs, sit, and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or bend. The employee may have to spend the entire work shift on their feet within the shop environment.

The incumbent may be regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. The environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Hazards:

Exposure to additional heat during fitting/welding process above ambient temperature and direct exposure to weld fumes. Exposure to electrical hazards, grease, loud noises, and outside elements occur continually or regularly. This job requires handling metal objects, some of which have sharp edges. Extreme care and awareness should be taken for all production jobs. Below are some common hazards that exist for this particular position. Set up and run of equipment provides the potential for injury through slips, falls, strains, pinch points, tripping hazards, shot blasting equipment, high pressure air nozzles, material handling equipment. There will also be frequent exposure to outside elements for short periods of time. Being outside will also expose them to material handling equipment such as forklifts, straddle trucks, and shag trucks.  The job requires safety glasses, hearing protection, and metatarsal safety shoes be worn at all times.
