A Brief Summary of This Position:

The Regional Project Engineering Supervisor is responsible for the oversight of the engineering functions required for the design and installation of large Solar projects.  The regional engineering team will include a mix of disciplines including electrical, mechanical, and structural engineers, project engineers, and Information Technology.  Included is the full design responsibility for processing specific orders (including those projects requiring PE stamping), engineering custom solutions to meet customer requirements, general design engineering support for drafting and sales, and providing guidance and training for Associate, Design, Project Engineers, and Senior Professional Engineers.      

Essential Functions:

  • Staff, develop, and coach the regional project engineering team to best achieve goals and objectives in coordination with overall Divisional goals and objectives.
  • Develop and recommend manpower and budget recommendations and ensure control of expenses.
  • Provide training, direction, and motivation for teammates and proper recognition of performance to promote professional development and to assure that the work is performed satisfactorily.  Review team member performance and recommend appropriate action as needed.
  • Establish work procedures and guidelines to facilitate the flow and accuracy of work, and prioritize schedules when necessary to meet the requirements of sales, manufacturing, and the customer.
  • Implement established Company, Division, and Department policies and communicate them to the team. 
  • Participate in professional societies and industry technical activities.  Keep yourself and others informed about competition, industry standards, innovations, and technological advances.
  • Maintain good relationships with customers, agents, suppliers, and consulting engineering firms.  Emphasize responsiveness to customer needs while maintaining company goals.
  • Evaluate customers and their projects in terms of balancing meeting their needs and the company’s performance goals and objectives.  Interpret customer specifications, recommend alternative approaches where appropriate, and negotiate their acceptance.
  • Work with the operations and maintenance team to evaluate field problem reports and initiate corrective action to prevent problem recurrence.
  • Work with manufacturing and quality assurance to establish and maintain acceptable tolerances and standards of workmanship.
  • Work with new product development and R&D on next-generation products and specifications. 

Other Important Details about the Role:

The work carried out under the management of this position is the structural, mechanical, and electrical design engineering and drafting related to fabricated steel structures and controls used for the automated sun tracking of photovoltaic power plants.  The incumbent applies intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields.  This person makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods and represents the organization at conferences and industry committees. The position requires the use of advanced techniques and the modification and extension of theories, precepts, and practices of the incumbent's field and related sciences and disciplines. 

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with 6+ years of relevant experience
  • Demonstration of leadership experience through project management or prior supervisory experience
  • Skills in managing professional people including strong leadership qualities and the ability to motivate employees toward personal and common objectives
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks within the Engineering organization and provide direction to individual engineers and drafters
  • Ability to establish goals and direction for teams as well as empower and support team’s actions
  • Good communication skills in both technical and non-technical application

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Master of Engineering degree
  • Experience in the solar industry with a solid understanding of the end use of the product is preferred
  • Professional Engineering registration (qualified through examination) is preferred
  • Passport holder and ability to obtain Visas in countries where Valmont conducts business

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Incumbent will be required to travel primarily to US locations, but some international travel may be required infrequently.  Overnight travel may represent up to approximately 30%. Work is typically performed in an office setting; however, the incumbent may be required to go into the production or shipping/receiving areas or work out in the field.  The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods, as well as talk and listen on the phone and participate in meetings. The work environment is generally fast-paced and demanding.  While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch. Talking and hearing are required for this role. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.  This position may require the incumbent to work outside and travel during all seasons of the year. As a result, the position may require moving about, lifting, stooping, bending, climbing stairs, and kneeling in rare instances.  The incumbent must be able to drive a vehicle, fly in commercial airplanes, communicate up and down the organization, and work with individuals from different cultures and backgrounds. The minimum base pay is $115,100 and the max is $179,800 plus bonus eligible.
