A Brief Summary of This Position:

The Director level role is responsible for the overall coordination, functional management and leadership of all of the sales activities for Valmont Utility Solar product segment in North America.  Executing those functions essential to sales revenue and goal achievement, this position is responsible for the overall successful implementation of Valmont Solar product segment plans.  Specific duties include customer relationship management, sales plan development and implementation, sales reporting, objective setting and management consistent with company objectives, demand generation, sales process optimization, sales job design, sales training, sales program implementation, and recruiting and selection of sales force talent.  Reporting to the Vice President and General Manager, the Director of Sales - Solar will ensure the objectives and priorities established by Valmont Utility are implemented by the sales organization in the U.S. and Canada.

Essential Functions:

  • This position reports to the Vice President and General Manager, North America Utility.
  • This role requires up to 50% travel (internationally/domestically), including overnight stays


  • In support of division strategy and product-segment objectives, establishes both territory and target customer strategies; deploys these strategies through the development and implementation of field sales action plans
  • Develops and manages annual and quarterly sales goals and objectives:
    • Develops objectives consistent with division objectives and product plans as defined by Business Line Manager - Solar
    • Ensures regular reporting and transparency of results and adherence to plan
    • Develops sales execution plans to ensure objectives are realized
  • Ensures accurate sales forecasting and planning processes are used consistently in support of the Solar Product segment


  • Business Development; manages key customer relationships and participates in closing strategic opportunities; incubates new strategic partners
  • Maintains continuous high-level, executive contact with territory accounts and focus on the establishment and maintenance of long-term strategic relationships
  • Generate sales volume, optimizes product  mix and maximizes selling price by keeping current with supply and demand, changing trends, economic indicators, and competitors
  • Proactively identifies opportunities for sales process improvement
  • Owns preparation of commercial response to our customers.  Responsible for RFQ response, including customer inputs in support of pricing; ensures contract review is complete and positioned for commercial response
  • Implements Valmont North America commercial strategy including product plans, customer plans, pricing objectives, contract objectives


  • Provides timely, consistent and detailed feedback on customer strategies and needs, market and industry trends and competitive information.  Ensures Business Development managers receive this input for integration into product planning efforts
  • Monitors the accuracy and efficient distribution of sales reports and other intelligence essential to the company.  Assists in the development of new reporting tools as needed
  • Complete revenue forecasts and win/loss reports that illustrate sales team's overall performance against objective

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Preferred Bachelor’s Degree with 7+ years relevant experience or Associates Degree with 9+ years relevant experience or 11+ years of relevant experience
  • Sales Management and Leadership experience with a track record of consistent and exemplary achievement
  • Demonstrated mathematical aptitude, exceptional financial acumen
  • Ability to deliver a clear and compelling value proposition to customers/partners
  • Experience in a complex sales environment, managing large and demanding customer accounts
  • Team player; must be able to work collaboratively with others from all areas of Valmont
  • Decisive problem-solving ability and capability to assess people and situations with accuracy
  • Confident self-starter with integrity and accountability
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, as well as strong negotiation and strong managerial/leadership skills
  • Exceptional skills in hiring, training and motivating sales people
  • Highly motivated, competitive, and entrepreneurial individual with a desire to tackle challenging opportunities
  • Must be able to effectively and persuasively present complex information in a simply way to executive level audiences

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Management or Engineering
  • Sales experience in the North America Solar PV structures industry
  • Utility industry experience
  • MBA

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

The work environment varies depending upon where the incumbent is working.  The three areas the incumbent should be prepared to work in are in an office environment, visiting a customer workplace, including production warehouses or field sites.   While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to various weather conditions including wet and/or humid conditions and occasional extreme heat or cold, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, dirt, dust, etc.  The incumbent may be occasionally exposed to moving equipment.  The noise level in the work environment will vary based upon location, but is generally moderate to quiet.  Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) may be required in some work environments and the incumbent needs to be prepared to wear (PPE) as needed.  Various PPE needed includes, but is not necessarily limited to, hard hat, safety glasses, high visibility vests or other clothing, boots or sturdy walking footwear (or steel-toed boots), etc.  The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings.    Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  Travel requirements are 50% for this position.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer.  The employee is occasionally required to move about the office or worksite.  Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
