A Brief Summary of This Position:

This Supervisor role is responsible for supervising the daily operations of the Engineering functions within the Engineered Support Structures Division.  This includes functions as they relate to customer support and department specific improvement projects, for product lines within the site.  This position serves as the first level of escalation contact for the team members, internal and external Valmont customers.  The incumbent assists the Director in annual planning and goal setting for the team.  The Engineering Supervisor is also be responsible for developing individuals within their career track, supporting market changes, and driving accountability to deliver results.

Essential Functions:

•         This position reports to the Director of Engineering and Technical Customer Services and will have four direct reports

•         Travel requirements within the U.S. are approximately 10%

•         Supervise daily operations functions of the ESS Engineering group

•         Provide leadership and technical support to team, internal and external Valmont customers

•         Work closely with support staff personnel to assist support staff with achieving goals

•         Provide formal performance plan feedback and evaluate team members as part of the performance management process

•         Set departmental initiative such that employees participate on involvement teams in support of critical success factors of the division, including the continuous quality improvement of processes and services

•         Maintain and improve the functional aspect of the position 

•         Coach, mentor, and motivate colleagues to ensure accuracy in all work

•         Identify areas of improvement and implement changes or consult with management obtain proper approval for changes, if needed

•         Correct problems or refer them to the appropriate resource for correction

•         Lead colleagues and stakeholders to develop or improve procedures or functionality of processes and procedures

•         Maintain a high degree of coordination with other Valmont support staff and their activities

•         Use of project management tools such as Agile boards and action plans expected

•         Help identify employee training needs

•         Recruitment and interviewing of personnel

•         Software application training

Other Important Details about the Role:

Incumbent oversees the Engineering operations.  These functions include quote completion, order completion, customer support during specification changes, and customer support for non-standard request. There is complexity involved with the coordination of duties performed to ensure timely, appropriate, continued support for all customer requests.  The incumbent oversees and supervises the day-to-day workload of the team, as well as organizes and executes projects that support the team’s goals. The incumbent supports the Sales Engineering role, effectively utilizing individual strengths within the team to support the demands, and demonstrate and drive a culture of solution providers and technical leadership.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

•         Bachelor’s degree with 6+ years relevant experience

•         Strong leadership, problem solving, planning, communication, and motivational skills

•         Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy while working in a fast paced environment with  multiple deadlines

•         Conceptual, analytical and organizational skills for developing processes and procedures in addition to coordinating implementation

•         Capable of effectively communicating with all levels of management

•         Passion and integrity with the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results

•         Ability to occasionally lift up to 15 pounds, although most frequent lift is up to 10 pounds

•         Ability to travel up to 10% domestically on an annual basis

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

•         Engineering degree in mechanical, civil or structural engineering

•         Professional Engineer (PE) license

•         Previous supervisory experience

•         Ten (10) years of related engineering experience

•          Knowledge of structural engineering design principles

•         Five (5) years of experience in product engineering

•         Two (2) years of experience in project management

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an office setting.  The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings.    Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  Minimal travel requirements for this position.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer.  The employee is occasionally required to move about the office.  Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
