How you will contribute

Valmont is currently seeking a highly motivated and talented individual for the General Manager position at our Claxton, Georgia facility. We are looking for a highly driven individual that will be accountable for the overall operations and profitability of the manufacturing facility while maintaining outstanding product quality and customer service objectives.   • Ensure business unit goals are met by working with the Commercial Department establishing sales and manufacturing goals, standardizing procedures and practices and ensuring that department heads are accountable to achieve these results.
  • Promote organization in industry, manufacturing or trade associations. Demonstrate a commitment to the Valmont Safety Mission Statement and Corporate Safety’s “Safety by Objectives (SBO’s)” process by performing the following: 
    • Providing support and resources to complete 100% of the site SBO plan.
    • Participating in quarterly review of SBO plan.
    • Conducting annual safety performance review of site facilities and management team.
    • Following Leader Standard Work including conducting site safety audits annually.
    • Assuring the site management team completes annual supervisor safety performance evaluations and provides feedback to the supervisor team.
    • Participating in quarterly safety/workers compensation claim reviews.
  • Lead the site’s effort to be the innovative market leader by driving unsurpassed services and applications into production areas in order to meet the needs and to exceed the expectations of the customer. Participate in sales and customer contact and follow-up both proactively, as necessary.
  • Ensure the site’s effective operations by monitoring results, comparing actual performance to established standards and taking appropriate action to forestall or correct problem situations revealed through operating results.  Rolling out lean manufacturing principles, standard work, problem resolution strategies and basically engaging the workforce in day-to-day continuous improvement activities.  Conduct continuous cost reduction programs throughout the organization and trains all employees to participate in continuous improvement efforts.

  • Ensure the profitability of the site by directing and monitoring activities to achieve satisfactory operation and growth performance as measured in terms of return on investment, profit margins, manufacturing and labor costs and increased sales volume.

  • Ensure the sound financial position of the site by overseeing the development of annual operating budgets of costs and expenses and collaborate in the development and presentation of strategic plans, long range plans and annual operating plans. Direct and coordinate promotion of services performed to develop new markets, increase share of market and obtain competitive position in industry.

  • Ensure a safe working environment by overseeing and directing appropriate action on all matters related to personal health and safety of employees and of the environment so that all safety and environmental regulations are met or exceeded. 

  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations issued by local, state and federal regulatory agencies in all areas to include employment, wage per hour, affirmative action, etc.

  • Oversee physical condition of facility and direct maintenance through a systematic program of repairs or through initiation of fixed capital requests when this action is economic or appropriate.

  • Develop and maintain human capital capable of achieving objectives through appropriate structuring, staffing, developing, appraising and rewarding. Develop key employee talents necessary to obtain short- and long-range goals by effective direction, counseling, and training.  Develop plan to reduce turnover and retain employees.
  • Create added Total Value Impact (TVI) and obtain a good return on assets managed, while maintaining a growth-oriented global perspective and creating a culture of continuing change and improvements resulting in cost savings and increasing value year after year.
  • Prepare, implement, and monitor the annual plan and various financial reports and statistics to ensure adherence to short and long range financial goals.

  • Ensure that your direct reports are aware of the acceptable parameters for gifts in the Code of Business Conduct and that it is their responsibility to advise you of gifts they have been offered.
  • Administer policies and procedures through the Plant Manager to ensure maximum productivity and thru-put, reduce operating cost, and ensure the safest possible plant operations while maintaining good labor relations.
  • Develop and provide leadership to implement various human resources programs and policies to ensure good plant relationships and a culture of creativity, continuous improvement, and high performance of the workforce.
  • Maintain organizational relationships outside of the manufacturing facility including interactions with all functional areas of the Utility Division and Corporate staff, as well as, vendors, customers and other business associates.
  • Monitor policies and procedures to ensure an optimum turnover of inventory, and to maintain buying practices, which will maximize gross margin on all product groups.
  • Provide executive leadership and direction through The Valmont Way program.
  • Monitor administrative functions to ensure ability to effectively support and manufacture operations while maximizing profits and providing continued market penetration.

  • Provide leadership to develop new products and markets for utility product while obtaining current sales objectives and maximizing market share and profitability.

  • Ensure that your direct reports are familiar with and understand the provisions of the Valmont Industries, Inc., Code of Business Conduct as it relates to the work that they perform.

  • Ensure customer satisfaction is high by providing excellent service, a high level of quality, and keeping commitments of on time delivery.

 What it takes

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree  in Business, Engineering, Operations Management or other similarly related field
  • Ten years of previous experience in a leadership position with increasing levels of financial and functional responsibility
  • Seven years profit/loss leadership experience
  • Proven track record in lean or continuous improvement manufacturing methodologies and tools
  • Management level oversight of Safety and/or OSHA regulation in a manufacturing or logistics environment
  • Ability to travel locally as needed, up to 15%

Highly qualified candidates will also possess:

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Business Management or related field
  • Two years of previous experience in a manufacturing or production facility
