A Brief Summary of This Position:

The Level I NDT Technician’s role is to ensure all products, produced by Valmont meet minimum company standards and customer requirements. The technician thoroughly inspects products for fit, form and function requirements, based on industry standards and customer specific guidelines. The Technician must prepare proper documentation of conformity for review and acceptance by the end customer.


Essential Functions:

  • Record testing and inspection information on the required inspections sheets, production cards, and computer reports
  • Ensure correct assembly of fabricated materials by conducting Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) using but not limited to the following methods: Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Visual Testing (VT), and hands on dimensional verifications in accordance with blueprints or drawings
  • Interpret industry standard welding codes, Valmont guidelines, and related customer specific requirements as they apply to NDT and pass or reject materials accordingly
  • Produce accurate, timely inspection reports
  • Decision making authority to reject material in order to minimize potential financial loss and risk of customer dissatisfaction
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, as needed
  • This position reports into NDT Supervisor
  • This role may require up to 5% travel domestically

Other Important Details about the Role:

  • Participate in training program which includes classroom and hands-on training
  • Upon completion of training program incumbent must pass certification exam, including written exams and hands-on demonstration of testing method proficiency 
  • Conduct professional interactions with manufacturing team members, and customers or their designated 3rd party representatives. 
  • Maintain a safe and productive work environment, as well as high standard of quality

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • 2 years of additional education or relevant experience, with at least 6 months in a welding or inspection environment
  • Current certification in either Magnetic Particle Level II, Ultrasonic Testing Level II, or Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
  • The ability to learn NDT inspection methods and earn certifications, as outlined below
  • Complete Magnetic Particle Level II certification in accordance with ASNT-TC-1A (latest edition) within 6 months of hire or transfer date
  • Complete Ultrasonic Testing Level II certification in accordance with ASNT-TC-1A (latest edition) within 12 months of hire or transfer date
  • Achieve American Welding Society – Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification within 2 years of eligibility and once MT and UT certifications are obtained
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • The ability to pay attention to detail and follow written and verbal instructions
  • The ability to read and interpret production drawings, specifications and codes

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree or Certificate in Non-Destructive Testing or Welding discipline
  • Previous experience with or certification in MT, UT, or CWI
  • 1 year of previous experience in a welding or inspection environment
  • The ability to work timely and expeditiously to deliver an on-time result without errors
  • The ability to work and communicate effectively and efficiently with plant employees, supervisors, management, and customers
  • Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results


Working Environment and Physical Efforts:


This job is performed in an indoor shop environment. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  The temperature range inside this area is from 60 degrees in the winter to over 100 degrees in the summer. Some outside work may be required during the various seasons. This is a noisy environment with sound levels above 80 decibels. Ear plugs should be worn. Safety glasses and metatarsal safety boots are required at all times in the work area. The employee must be able to spend the entire shift in the shop environment. Most warehouse operations are exposed to some type of disagreeable working conditions such as cold, heat, dust, dirt, fumes, noise, vibration, or oil.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.


Work is occasionally performed in an office setting.  The incumbent maybe required to sit for a period of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings.    The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer.  Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests.
